I am putting in a fire pit and started to dig to level the area and immediately ran into this. Any ideas what it is? It's a donut shape. Sort of like a handle maybe? Afraid to dig deeper, not that I have to really. But also not sure if I should be putting a fire pit on top of it. I have city water and sewage.

Also it seems to be able to wiggle a bit but is solidly stuck in the ground.

Any telephone / power poles nearby? It looks like a power pole anchor.

And very well could be a old telephone pole tiedown or a ground steak. You should be safe to remove it.

Anchor for a guy wire, must be a light pole nearby or there was at on time

That’s a tie down/ground stake. If there’s no cable attached to it it’s just an old leftover. Yank it out.

Okay I yoinked it out and nothing bad happened… Yet! But now I have a 4ft long metal weapon so that’s cool

Yeah, if it was me what I would do if you have a saw is maybe dig another four or 5 inches down and maybe a foot around and just take a good shot sharp sauce on metal blade and just cut it and then just bury it unless you’re feeling froggy and you wanna pull it out but that son of a bitch could be eight or 10 feet long depending on what it was used for

  8. Could be a grounding rod if not a utility pole anchor.

It should come out turning it counterclockwise.

It appears to be an anchor as others have said but it could be in use as a property marker perhaps?

That’s the girl part for the Guy wire.

Call 811 for dig safe. Nobody should dig anywhere without a dig safe mark out done.

It could be dog tie-out stake. I have one that looks similar and corkscrews in to the ground.

That’s one of those Joe Rogan shaped kettle bells

If the world ever stops spinning, give this bad boy a rip and it’ll start right back up like a lawnmower.

Looks like someone buried a hatchet… and you dug it up

Looks like the eye of a PISA anchor. If there is no wire attached you are probably ok to keep digging but expect a decent steel rod 22.5mm thick or thicker to extended underground for at least 1.5 m, maybe longer than 3 m. Dig around to get your depth then cut it off with a zip disc on a grinder, or something bigger if you have it. Hack saw will work but be tiring and you might need to dig out more “workspace”.

Depending on where you live there could be an existing right-of-way or easement which could see your fire pit removed if it ends up being used again.
