With the hot summer weather set to continue, people are looking for ways to cool down their homes. One simple method is to add some air-purifying plants to your home.
While these won’t cool down the home the way something like an air conditioning unit would, they can make it feel fresher and less stuffy through a process called transpiration.
This is the process by which plants ‘sweat,’ releasing water vapor from tiny pores in their leaves. In the home, this adds moisture to the air, helping to create a cooler, more comfortable environment.
Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk explains: “Plants ‘sweat’ like us. They take in water through their roots, send it to their leaves, and release it as vapour through tiny pores. This process is called transpiration. Similar to how sweat cools our skin, the vapour from the plants cools the air around them. Essentially the more water a plant gives off, the more it cools the air around it.”
“Of course it’s not going to cool your home down the way air conditioning would but adding some moisture back into the air can definitely make the room feel fresher and less stuffy – think of them like small, natural humidifiers,” he added.
Five houseplants that will make your home feel cooler
Areca Palm
The areca palm has a high transpiration rate, meaning it releases a large amount of moisture into the air. This plant is also tolerant of low light and very tough, so you won’t have to spend too much time caring for it.
Alongside these benefits, the areca palm will add a tropical and exotic touch to your home, making it the perfect summer addition to your collection of house plants.
Boston Fern
The Boston fern has a high moisture output and will help purify the air. Great for placing in bathrooms and kitchens, this fern requires an already humid environment. Slightly more high-maintenance than the areca palm, it will require regular misting and access to high humidity.
Aloe Vera
Alongside providing a cooling atmosphere, aloe vera plants require little watering, making them great for those looking for something low-maintenance. The plant’s gel is also useful for treating sunburns, an ideal benefit for the hot summer period.
Rubber Plant
This statement plant makes a great addition to any home. Its large leaves help with humidity, and it’s extremely easy to care for, even when placed indoors.
Peace Lily
The peace lily is another popular houseplant choice thanks to its lovely cream flowers. It’s known for purifying the air and works well in any room. It’s also easy to care for and flowers occasionally.
