While exploring Grapevine Mesa’s Joshua tree forest, a low cluster of Beavertail cactus (Opuntia basilaris) appeared among the gravelly soil and creosote scrub, a vivid contrast to the towering yuccas overhead. Native to the Mojave and Sonoran deserts, this cactus produces brilliant magenta flowers in spring, attracting native pollinators and offering seasonal color to the otherwise muted terrain.
I've posted my journal entry with more photos here, as well as a guide to the Grapevine Mesa Joshua Tree Forest here.
