Elijah Aaron, ‘On Our Way’
Heat. Heat. [Music] Just got back from our trip up north and everything is so bright and in full color blooming. It’s just absolutely gorgeous. It actually struck my eye when we got home and I looked out the window cuz up north you see a lot of green and when I looked out the window it was just so many beautiful bright colors and um everything just got so huge. We just got a lot of rain so everything’s just growing amazing and looks so great. Just absolutely beautiful. Look at that all the way around. One of my favorite kolas is right here. And this is the trusty rusty. I mean, it’s always true blue. It can, you know, you can always count on it to be large and add that really bright, vibrant color. And it has just that little trimming of yellow around the orange leaves. It makes it look a little tropical, but it also adjusts super well as we transition from summer into fall later in the season. So, it goes with summertime looks and fall time looks. What are you doing? Um, it’s while I’m finishing up my video, which I’m going to go by Luna to do that. You going to go over by Luna? Yep. Awesome. Luna’s the OG. She needs to be in it. A Lana’s making her little video with Luna. And over by Luna’s area are those really cute little pink bucket containers that we created early on in the season. And they are so huge and they look amazing. Look how cute that little area is. A pretty soon Indie will be back home. Two more weeks and Luna’s counting down the days. Lana just included in her video that Luna loves patunias and she does. These patunias will never get longer than they are right now because Luna keeps them nice and trim. Right, Luna? I did come over here though to show you guys this gorgeous garden outside of the garden room. It’s attached over here to Luna’s little space. She’s got her little teddy bear laying out here right now, too. But I’m going to get in close to these gorgeous flowers. There’s so many beautiful varieties. Gorgeous zenia colors. This is the Oklahoma mix in here. So, they’re extra large flowers and plants. We got to clean up some of that colundula there. Hi, Luna. She’s rubbing up against me right now. Oh, hi Luna. Oh, she Look at She loves to feel someone up against her. Oh, she doesn’t have Indie to do it with her, right? Look how gorgeous that is. And you got the little touch of pinks through the smaller purple zenyas back there. Right in here. Those are some of the cut and comes too are mixed in here. I mixed a lot of my zenya seeds together. And you’ve got the adgeratum in there too also. Look how beautiful. But yep, I do have to clean up some of these chundulas in here. And then coming down this way, our purple cone flowers are in blossom, which I’ll show you them on our uh BMS in the front. It’s filled with cone flour. Just absolutely gorgeous. And then we do have a couple little dalas over here, which I do have to stake this one, otherwise it’s going to kind of fall over. But this is where Luna’s fence is in here. So, she likes to come in here and eat on some of those leaves. We call this the enrichment garden. It’s kind of like a hay feeder with that fencing right there and her being able to eat some of those leaves. But yeah, I should add some other things that I know she would like in there as well. Look at Lana. Lana just loves horses so much. A little too much. She says that you can never love your horses or animals too much. And our apple tree is doing good. I’ve got to go ahead and trim this hybrid willow up there just a little bit so that way it doesn’t take the sun. That way we can get more apples forming this year. It’s looking really nice. Yep. So, this is still in Luna’s back area behind the little mini barn. And then here is the chicken and duck run. But they’re not out here right now. They’re too curious with those little silkies right now. They have I’ll show you actually. Just a girl and her horse. And before I go over by the little chickens and ducks, I’m just going to show you these baskets that Lana created. So, the very bright hot pink. This is a Super Tunia Vista series. That’s Paradise. And then she does have one giant pink in the center right up here. So, that’s where like the larger bright pink patunias are are coming from there. And then she also has three geraniums mixed in here. So now the patunias are finally starting to fall. So that way the deraniums can grow in right in the center there. So you can start seeing some blooms. That’s where you’re getting the orange color here. And we use the variety for the deraniums because they get nice and full big leaves. They’re a more vigorous grower and they produce tons of blossoms and um large blossoms too. So that’s what’s nice. Yep. And then the other one’s over here. It’s looking so pretty. So we’ve had a lot of rain and being gone for a week, things do need a little bit of cleaning. So a lot of deadheading and things like that. Uh but we’re going to get a little bit more rain. So I’m just going to kind of wait for um that chore to do. And uh it’s just still so beautiful. I just we got to show it. Look at Daffy over there. He’s crazy. All right, let’s come over here by the little silky chicks. There’s only a few out right now. There were more earlier. So, their back area is small right now because we’re just acclimating them to the original flock. So, they have their area here, but then the other chickens have their area right behind. So they can see each other through the fence, start getting to know each other through the fence. And then inside the coupe, we will open that up as well with a little netting between so they can start just getting used to each other and smelling the same and just knowing that the little silkies aren’t going anywhere. They’re they’re here to stay. What a cute little window box. Sail’s creation. And this other cool container here, too, that she had me plant. She picked out all of the different varieties and it looks really beautiful. And there he is. Crazy Daffy. [Music] Daffy’s going to show us where he’s going. Where are you going? You just exploring in the water. These gardens over here on the east side of the garden room have grown tremendously in this past week. They are just huge and full of color and full of life as well. We came out later yesterday and there were just so many bees around, butterflies and hummingbirds and you can hear the cranes every once in a while. It’s just it’s extremely dreamy cuz then you got these curtains blowing in the wind and um it’s just really beautiful. And one of our favorites is the millet grass right here. It’s our natural little finch feeders or other small little birds. They love to land on it and eat the seeds. So this is the time of year that they start kind of uh seeding out and and doing that. So down here though, that red salvia is absolutely gorgeous. This is part of that unplugged series from Proven Wyinners. It’s really, really pretty. I see that the uh hummingbirds really love that one. They’re really drawn to reds and purples and um that’s one of their favorites. And then over here, I also noticed uh well, everything. It’s hard not to notice everything, but even these marolds here, they’re starting to come in blossom. and uh in the other garden, but here they’re just ginormous. So, those are they’re like called like the cracker jack maragold. So, 95% of our gardens we we seed start ourselves in case you’re new here. Um so, we do all of that in our greenhouse. And then over here, the bee balm is all in blossom along with a lot of our yarao, which we have yarao and balm in many other areas of the garden, but this is our largest patch of them. So, look at how beautiful this is. And be balm attracts a lot of beneficial bugs and pollinators. And it’s just really a beautiful flower. So unique. I just love it. That’s why I do add it in other areas. I do add other types of bee balms in our containers as well, just because there’s so many different kinds and just stunning. Here’s another patch of the millet which is really pretty. Got so much chundula in the garden this year. So, we have been harvesting like you saw in the last video which I’ll have to harvest more and kind of clean these ones up back here. Then we’ve got our zenyas. This is where some of them will fall. So you can Oh gosh, what is she doing now? Now she’s got a fake horse over there. [Music] She’s got a fake horse. That hobby horse. [Laughter] What’s he Do you got a fake horse, too? I wouldn’t doubt it. There they go. But this is the time of year where zenyas can start getting a little heavy. So they can fall if you get heavy rains or winds. So you can stake them. We just kind of allow them to do their thing. Um, you know, it would sometimes be nice to hold them and create them to be absolutely perfect. Some areas we do some of that, but I just really like things to just kind of naturally do their do their thing and then we’ll just kind of trim and control it where where it needs to be. just so that way we don’t drown out other varieties and we can enjoy all varieties and the colors that they create and and the uses that we use them for depending on what it is. That cana is so pretty. So I talked about this also in earlier videos how I saved a lot of our cana seeds. We also saved a lot of bulbs. So that’s end of season type work which we can share this year with you and show you kind of what we do and how we do it and how we store it and stuff like that. Some of our status is coming into blossom. Our white sage needs some trimming there. So we’ll have some fresh little bundles and dry material. And we’re back over by Luna space. And then this is how you enter over by the garden in front of the garden room by Luna space here which is like one of my favorite gardens I have to say. I just I love it. It’s so pretty and citrusy and fun and bright. Look at this. Look how big that Zenia flower is. That’s awesome. It fills my whole palm. Over [Music] [Music] here we got the shrimp plant, which is always one of my favorites for its unique uniqueness cuz it looks just like how it’s described, like a little shrimp. I love how intricate and delicate it looks as well. It’s just really unique. And next to it is the purple kufia. So beautiful. Every year I have to have the black and blue salvia in my garden. It’s just that true blue and it’s got that beautiful black plume stem which only makes that true blue pop even more. Got to kind of dead head some of it. Look how pretty it looks with that coral there. That coral tc cana behind it. It looks really cool against the millet here as well. And of course, you can never go wrong with with Victoria blue salvas. Like these are always my go-to for adding blue throughout because they’re super easy to seed start. They do take a little bit longer to germinate, but that’s only natural for salvas. I always feel like when you intermix the Victoria blue throughout it, it really just kind of takes the garden to a whole another level because it really allows other colors to pop against it and it just really adds a lot to the garden. I don’t really think I need to describe why you need it. You can see it and you can see very clearly why why you it’s a must in our garden. Even on this side amongst all of the warmth, the pinks, the corals, the yellows, the golds. I mean, there it is. You know, that beautiful pop of blue. So, this eucalyptus over here is in a container. And look how huge it’s getting. It loves this summer weather that we’re having. I’d say it’s about 10 12 feet at this point. It’s like a whole another new growth along the bottom, too. This one I won’t use for cutting for bouques or anything. A lot of these I like to just keep them large and bring them into the greenhouse. They create nice shady areas for sitting and they’re just beautiful. Walking into the garden room over here in this corner, I have my plumosa fern. And I’m sharing this one specifically because we seed started a lot of these last year and they took forever to germinate, but they finally germinated. I think it took like a month and actually a little longer and then it took like 4 months for them just to grow like an inch and then after that they just took off. But I kept this one in a really small pot which creates it to not take off as large. And I waited until um this year to pot it into just a little six and a half inch pot that we placed inside of this terracotta pot. So we had tons of them and we actually sold a lot of them too um when we had the store online for plants and um they were actually pretty popular because they were they’re an amazing plant to grow indoors cuz they they like it more like shady. They can take some sunlight, but not direct sunlight, not full sunlight, just almost like a filtered sunlight. And it was just gorgeous inside the house, too. And this elephant over here is called Illustrous. It’s got beautiful painted leaves. The wind’s blowing it right now, but look at how gorgeous that is. And this can get pretty big. It can get up to like 5T, but because I haven’t potted it into anything bigger yet, this is kind of where it’s it’s stained. So, that’s really with any plant. The more room you give it to grow, the larger it’ll it’ll get and perform for you. It’s getting kind of dark here, but it’s kind of cool how you can see the leaves behind there. And it’s really not dark in the garden room like you see on uh camera. It’s just that the camera can’t adjust to all the dark accents and the bright outside. Look how beautiful that is. Oh my goodness. The dark in here does not make it feel depressing when you’re sitting in here. It’s like that. It feels so cozy and so airy because there’s openings everywhere to view the garden, to um, you know, have enrichment activities with the animals cuz this is Luna’s pony deck. And, you know, as you can see, it’s windy and stormy, so the the pillows are everywhere, but that’s okay. Um, you know, it’s just got this calming, soothing feeling, and it’s we don’t use a stark black color. We’ve created our own custom color since the time we built even on our home. So our home looks lighter than everything else because it’s, you know, over 11 years old now. Like it’s 12 years old the paint color. So it really needs to actually be completely repainted because that’s how it fades. So do keep in mind that you know when you go darker with your house or your gardens or whatever, it’s going to fade. And like I said, we don’t we have never done the stark black. It’s more of like this charcoal with like an under hue of brown and blue. And it just really kind of has its own own look, you know, which is kind of like what we went with. We chose dark before dark was in style. And we did that because we saw all of the White House trends coming in and we kind of wanted to do something different and timeless. So, we went with charcoal and chocolate. But yeah, we also love it cuz we knew we were going to do a lot of gardens and I wanted the all the bright colors that I love intermixing to really pop. I found an animal over here. It’s a big one. I’m going to have to set a trap. Oh, wait. I already trapped you. You’re stuck. You’re stuck doing projects forever. She’s got me and I’m building some window boxes. A he’s going to build my little window boxes. So today I’m going to be building window boxes for the front of the veggie washing station over here. We’ve got some cool window openings with cool window grids on there. But right beneath it, we’re going to have window boxes, more like planter boxes cuz they’ll be they’ll be pretty deep. And that’ll give the the finishing touch for the exterior of the veggie washing station. I just love it over here. That wisteria vine is amazing. We also have some clatus growing on the bottom. But as you can see with the veggie washing station, we didn’t cover the entire thing with any type of roofing because we’re actually going to take a lot of the wisteria that’s right in here. And we’re going to start uh transferring it and training it to go up and over the uh washing station in there. So that way we get more shade in there, but naturally, but I did want it halfway kind of covered a little bit so that way, you know, the area where we’re going to have like a sink and stuff won’t get all wet every time we get a a storm. And Jason’s been documenting this whole little project that we’re doing over here. It’s another one of those garden indooroutdoor rooms. and where he’s going to be placing those window boxes are just right on the ground in front here and right here. So that way we can have flowers inside of the open windows. I don’t have any flowers left. I have a lot of kolas. So this here we’re going to just stuff in some kolas into these boxes here. This is another one of my eucalyptus over here. This variety is the baby blue. Jason said this is one of his favorites. He said it reminds him of like a bonsai tree, which I I can totally see why he would say that, but it is really unique and really cool how it has grown out really like that. Um, so this one was clipped and trimmed in the past. So now we’re just kind of letting it go and seeing kind of what it does. And I do have some of the banana trees in here, too. As you can see, they’re loving it in here. I just moved them in here last week. So from inside the washing station, you can see all the views of the garden, which is really fun, fun, and gorgeous. And then over here is where that wisteria is. This is where Jason just was. And we did kind of take some of the vines that were kind of going along the ground and everything. Even one’s popping up right here right now. Um, so we’re going to grab all of those and all of these here. here. They’re super long. And we are going to drag them up up up and up to the top here. So that way we have wisteria inside. And then on it as well, we had it so that way the roof kind of overhang a little bit but open. So that way there will be wisteria hanging and trailing over the top along the whole outside. It’ll be really really neat cuz there’s so much of it over there. And I just painted the little awning. And we’ll go more into this space, like I said, with the video. Jason’s kind of been creating with it. So, we’ll kind of go over that as we do it. But, this is one of those things that we just work on if we get a chance. But otherwise, there’s really no rush with it to have it done and completed by this year. It’s just we wanted to make sure to get the structure in for now. And um cuz we’re going to be, you know, basically starting to open our gardens a lot more now. and we’re going to be providing like some different um photo shoot events and stuff like that. This will be a really awesome photo spot for families and kids, school photos, all that kind of fun stuff. How nice. Jason’s getting my window boxes, right? I’ll whip these up in no time. Just a quick hammer and nail. Should you should be done in two minutes. Was it just a quick cut and hammer? Cut and hammer, I think. Yeah. From a long time ago. That’s what Casey would always uh Casey would always say, “Oh, it’s just a quick cut and hammer.” And I’m like, “Yeah, yeah, hun.” Mhm. There’s always something that comes up to make it complicated. Well, that’s what I did with these raised beds when they were all just We had just the basic, you know, layout with, you know, which was worked well, too, for gardening. We had all those, you know, rectangular ones. I mean, you could go back like four years and you’ll see like our garden completely changed. But I remember it was the month of January and I just started cutting these beds apart and opening up the middle, reconfiguring them, building them. And then Jason came home one day and he’s like, “Um, what are you doing?” And I’m like, “It’s just a cutting hammer. I can do this. I can do this.” But then I did have to have him help me finish some things like bring in some of these big stones. And um I actually did the stone work myself on the on the ground and then around the fire pit. Jason did help me bring in more of the gravel to fill in right here, and we did that as a team. Um, so I I still love this fire pit, though. This fire pit is one of my favorites cuz it’s one of my own um works of art in the garden. And that’s what’s so cool about creating your own gardens is you can create, you know, really personalized pieces in your garden. And I’m a big rock hounder, rock collector. You know, I I always wanted to be a geologist growing up, but it just wasn’t in my cards. So, this was my way of just really, you know, collecting things in nature and being able to display a lot of my collections throughout the years. So, collections from all over, you know, it’s just really cool to see them out in the open now rather than in plastic bags or boxes in the basement. There she goes. So, I came over here though. I know we show this space a lot, but there is a beautiful Dalia in Blossom over here, and it is absolutely huge. Like, I can’t even zoom in because it’s like too large. It just fills up the entire camera screen. But if you can see, if you see my fingers behind there, that shows you how big this dia is. This is like crazy huge. Look at that. And it’s so beautiful in color. I’ll have to show this when the lighting isn’t as stark in another video cuz I’m It’s midday right now and you guys know how midday is. Everything’s sunny, but we’re enjoying it. So, I’m like, I want to show it. I don’t care if the lighting’s not perfect. It’s It’s absolutely gorgeous and it needs to be shown so that way people can, you know, get some ideas and just see beauty. So, outside of this whole garden space there by the fire pit, uh we have our other gardens over here. We have a lot of different little garden spaces. And over here are our raspberries. And they’re already in super good flavor. We grow mainly the golden berries, which is the Ann variety. We are just filled with berries as you can see all over. And we do have some red ones which are the heritage but and raspberries are just super sweet. I love them more than the red raspberries. I just think they taste better. But everything comes down to your own taste buds. There’s a lot to harvest right now. So, I’ll probably pick more in a little bit after making the video so that way we just have some fresh ones for snacking in the house. The girls like to just come over here and pick them fresh whenever we’re out here. But, you know, I mean, sometimes it’s nice just to have some already picked. And you don’t want them to go bad either. You let them sit on there too long and then we start getting little bugs that, you know, become attracted to them because they’re like, “Ooh, there’s some rotting fruit over here.” And we don’t want that. So, we’ll get a lot of these picked. You can just see them all lined up along the side of the box here. These have been here for 5 years, so they’re really established. They filled in all on their own. And we kept them in a box because we didn’t want them to spread everywhere. And so with these, as you can see, they filled in nice. So all I do is I trim them early spring, like the old growth from the year before, and I just leave them. I don’t fertilize. I do nothing. I usually will pull weeds, but this year I didn’t really need to. There’s still some weeds in here, as you can see down there, but they really have no room to grow or anything. You can pull them if you want, but this just has filled in so much to where we really don’t need to, you know, do a lot of weeding over here anymore. So, now that they’re in season to eat, these will go all throughout the fall for us. There’s like just so many. You lift up all these different branches and there’s just so many underneath. There is one more space that I do want to just quickly uh put in here. That’s our front yard bms that we added. And there are a lot of wild flowers on it. And right now the cone flowers are in blossom and it’s super pretty. So I do want to share that. Just walking by Jason here. I’m going to show them the cone flowers. Yeah. Oh, that’s nice. Yeah, I was I was going to say, is that deep enough? But yeah, so we’re going to double stack it like that. Nice. And a little tip because they’re not super deep. I’m going to actually mount this to the vegetable washing station and then I’ll apply the face to it once it’s on. Oh, yeah. And uh that way you can screw it in good. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Awesome. Pro tip, right? So, I’m heading us up to the very front yard area. As you can see, we’re walking past some other gardens here. These gardens here are really un unmaintained. I really haven’t even hit them yet this year for cleanup or anything, even though it’s like along our driveway, but they’re fine. They look fine. They they’re natural and pretty. So, we’re over here by the front driveway, and we’ve got BMS in here. We’ve created these to kind of add trees to create a privacy fence from the road cuz see there’s cars. So, oh, that was actually my mom. So, the cone flowers are in blossom. Look at that beautiful monarch just flying around. There’s how many of them? Wow. I don’t know if you can even see them. There’s They’ve been flying and all around here. It’s just gorgeous. You can hardly even see the house now from the road. It’s really cool. There’s a little bit of Queen Anne’s lace up here. Not too much though cuz we have trimmed some so that it doesn’t just take over. We also have a little bit of Rebecca in there. So pretty and peaceful. Just kind of take you guys on a little walk over here. You can tell it’s Saturday. I don’t know if you guys can hear all kinds of noise, but like I feel like every neighbor is doing projects. We’re all busy little bees. Like everywhere you look, there’s cone flour. This right here is the burm that we just cut down and cleaned up. And along it are all hybrid willows, which I just literally stuck cutings in there mid-March. It was super cold, but it was wet. And I just stuffed the branches into the ground. Just stuck them in as far as I could. And they’re actually all doing amazing. They’re greening up. They have new leaves, new branches. So by next year, the year after, you won’t even see anything beyond there. I’m kind of standing at the top of the burm right now. So, I’m looking down on the echgonatias and then that’s into our yard. Up over here is an extra pasture that the chickens and ducks have access to which they love coming into early morning and the end of the night. Look how pretty. I’m always weary about walking in the tall areas here only because we do get some grass snakes and I mean we don’t have anything that’s going to kill us, right? You know, but it’s still, you know, it’s icky. Then over here is the driveway entrance into the garden. That’s where Jason’s working. You’re not done yet. I’m just teasing him. I’m not that big of a pain in the butt. If he doesn’t enjoy something, I always tell him, “I’ll just I’ll you don’t have to do it.” Well, I hope you guys enjoyed today’s video and I’ll see you next time. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] [Music]
