July 27th was the Unique Plant Festival and 60th anniversary of the Japanese Cactus Madman Association (日本サボテン狂人会)
I went while sick so I apologize for there not being too many photos. There was a lot to take in. If what was for sale is a general indicator, it seems like the current trend in Japan is pachypodiums of various types and agave (especially oteroi and utahensis).
In addition to the general sales section, there was an auction with some massive specimens going for ridiculous amounts of money. Including an ariocarpus that sold for $2,500 (¥380,000).
I was pretty restrained with my purchases, the dioscorea elephantipes being the most expensive purchase at ¥5000. If my setup was ready for more plants I would have bought way more, but I have too many seedlings taking up space currently.
I picked up:
Euphorbia horrida
Dorstenia foetida (already given me 7 seeds)
Dioscorea elephantipes
Epithelantha micromeris (called Moon World in Japan, though I’m confused by the pups coming from the crown and not the base)
Lophophora williamsii v. Texana
Euphorbia milii

Wow, thanks for sharing your photos! They’re all so weird and cute.
Really good stuff and prices are fairly reasonable

wow, this is fantastic! thank you for the photos. part of me wishes I knew of this event when I lived there, but that would’ve made the move away that much tougher, hah!
How cool!! Thanks for sharing all the little weirdos 🙂
