…I don't know what you call someone who makes terrariums.
I have this cool glass fire hydrant from goodwill (the lid comes off), and I think itd make a sick terrarium!

I keep houseplants, but have never dabbled in terrariums. Anyone have a simple guide or any recommendations for plants that'd look sick in here?

Container is about ~8 inches tall and will be mostly sealed but not airtight!

I forgot to add more information sorry!

Im fine with having to water frequently. I have grow lights it can stay under so no issues there either!

I’ve only ever done one but what I know is the following:

You want a drainage layer. This would be large grain, non absorbent material like gravel or Leca stones. Not too big tho, normal stones won’t work. The idea is to let water flow through the soil and settle without “drowning” the soil. For your terrarium, I would personally put 1-2 in of drainage.

Next, mesh (I use windowscreen mesh from amazon) between substrate and drainage. This simply makes it easier to clean and prevents substrate from getting dirty in the drainage.

For substrate mix you’d want to do like 10 mins of research. Different mixes will be better for different environments, but typically its something like coconut fiber, gardening soil, sand, etc.

For plants, this is a tall and not wide terrarium. Either you will want climbers to go around the side, or a tall center plant with moss surrounding it. This is completely up to you and what you want to see when looking inside.

Lastly: cleanup crew. For terrariums with any decent level of humidity, springtails are a must as they will keep it clean. As far as I’m aware, the specific type doesn’t matter.

Anything else will be your own research to make sure you make something you’re happy with.

Good luck and welcome to the hobby!

Cool container! I watched a few videos on YouTube to get started. This was the one I based my first build on (left out the isopods and predator) He gives some good tips and examples of plants that should do well! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf6zaKfa9v8
