Hi r/ No Lawns,
New to this community but I wanted to share my new documentary about Lawns here.
https://youtu.be/3SSeu4r8uXw?si=nLySnA3hndg4OTkF
Firstly, I have been scrolling this reddit and am so happy to see people here encouraging each other about this choice. As we talk about in the doc, the environmental choice to eliminate lawns seems like easy science-wise but the social pressure is immense. So seeing this reddit being a soft place to land in a world that, for some reason, is so upset about alternatives to the industrial lawn is very heart warming.
My long time writing partner and I made this movie with Chuck Nice (of Star Talk) and we decided to release it for free always in full on Youtube so that people like us can easily share this message. As a journalist, I like any media that brings this issue up BUT I feel obliged to share that I am very against lawns. The film shows some of the pros and cons of the points we make but very clearly I, the co-director, am pushing against lawns. Our goal with the film was to make an approachable fun way to show every single issue about lawns.
I was so happy to get to talk to the experts I talked to. I am a journalist though and even although I had read lots of their papers and books so I could keep up with them in an interview, if there was ever a question of fact I had and have a close back and forth with our experts. I say that to say, if you watch the film and have a question, I AM MORE THAN HAPPY to share your question with these really smart people. Realistically, except for an hour or so of cut footage, my expertise is all there on the screen haha.
The only place you could get a little extra behind the scenes info is in the very in-depth description on the film page.
Most importantly, Chuck, myself, my writing partners, and even the experts are really funny. My hope is that this is a film that can be shared to create empathy in this issue and bring it to a broader issue of pollution. My personal thoughts are that I am, quite frankly and quite energetically, baffled and frustrated by pollution in general but particularly lawns because IT'S AN OBVIOUS HOMERUN TO CUT DOWN ON POLLUTION. In contrast to that, I made this movie a very sweet, funny, and understanding take on the issue so that people do not feel any combative energy toward them; instead people stuck on the industrial lawn (a term one of our experts helped coin in a book) will be met with fun and undeniable science.
I really hope this group likes this movie and I hope we together can help the planet. Nice to meet you.
Mike
