(WSET) — Dirt is moving at the awareness garden near the Black Water Creek Trail in Lynchburg.

A new parking lot is being constructed.

In the end, there will be 38 new parking spaces for folks coming to remember loved ones and celebrate healing.

Clay Simmons, Deputy Public Works Director for the City of Lynchburg, said, “It will pull people hopefully off of the road; there’s a lot of people who park along the street there. This will give them somewhere dedicated to park that’s more outside of traffic.”

It also creates spaces for folks to enjoy the trail.

The project costs just over $330,000.

The Awareness Garden Foundation and the city of Lynchburg are sharing the cost.

“This has been something that the public has asked for a long time, and the awareness garden has wanted to work on. So we had an opportunity to partner up with them to do this,” said Simmons.

This project is expected to wrap up in February of next year.

The Awareness Garden itself is also expanding.

They’re creating a quieter space for visitors to contemplate, remember, or celebrate their victories.

Right now, they are raising money for improvements.

Those improvements will come at a later date.

The Awareness Garden is currently still open to the public, although sometimes it will have to close to construction.
