The hold has a20ft diameter and is roughly 2 feet deep
Some friends suggested a fire pit which I like the idea of. I'm new to landscaping and would love to learn some things on this project.
Is a fire pit possible or should I just buy dirt to fill it back up?

Maybe a below ground pool? You are about halfway there anyways…

  2. Landlocked_pirate23

A fire pit?!? It’d look more like a portal to hell!

  3. skittlesaddict

Roll a boulder into the middle and charge the masses five bucks to touch a real meteorite. I’m an ideas man.

You can throw a little bit of soil and mulch in it and plant flowers, maybe even a tree.

  5. ImmortanJerry

Everyone is gonna say fill it. I say go deeper. Be the guy on the block with the deepest hole in his yard

  6. NoHalfPleasures

Fill it with sand and work on your bunker game

  7. Franklin_le_Tanklin

Dig a deeper pit. Make it a below ground pool

  8. AnibasTheHutt

Perfect spot for a Virgin Mary bathtub shrine.

  9. Daddy_Day_Trader1303

Here me out, go deeper, way deeper, like “this is SPARTA!” deep

Do you have a current patio? That would be perfect for a paver patio with a firepit in the middle. Drop in 16 inches of gravel, 4 inches of paver setting sand, place pavers on top and viola!

Leave a 5 foot diameter circle dead center filled to the top with gravel and put your firepit on top of that

If you just want to fill in, I’d get a load of fill soil, and then a load of top soil.

If you want a fire pit I’d get a load of fill soil delivered. Build your pit in the center, then fill in the rest of the ground with a load of whichever decorative stone you like best. Or 2b gravel if you like cheap.

Alternative ideas. If you are considering a pond/water feature you are well on your way there to getting one.

If you want a shed, gazebo, patio in this area. You got your digging more then done so just fill with a gravel base up to the right height for whatever you’re putting in.

No matter what, you’ll probably want to price check some of your local landscape supply companies. And see if you have any way for a truck to get into this area, if its possible will save you a ton of labor.

I’ve been obsessed with the r/ponds subreddit lately, so my first thought when I saw the picture was that it was the start of a pond. If you visit that subreddit, it just might end up that way, lol. 🙂

It’s a very large hole, you are off to a good start

  14. Miserable-Garlic-532

Throw a rock in the middle, call NASA and tell them a meteor hit in your yard

  15. TBLwarrior

Have drainage problems? Reroute the water to whatever source it comes from – you have a new rain garden spot

  16. chadius333

Dig out all of the dirt outside of it so it’s level.

Fire pit in the middle and use the rim to create seating. Kinda like a small round amphitheater.

Lots of possibilities. Since you are uncertain, play it safe. I say buy a solo stove smokeless pit (or other brand) and leave the hole alone while you test out playing around with a “fire pit”. Once you are done with the honeymoon phase of a fire pit like what happened with the pool; you will know if you want to invest any further or fill it in.

You could also fill it with concrete and build a circular gazebo or one of those wild in ground trampolines 🤣. Lots of options.

A rain garden would be perfect with native plants

  20. FarYam3061

compact some gravel and sand then pavers. put out some chairs and a firepit or grill. you can have chat gpt give you some ideas

  21. bluenicke

I like the fire pit idea. You’re a little close to your drive, but if you make it a little larger with some limestone stamped down with some paper stones around the edge of a ring, nice.

  22. johnyeros

    Dug it deeper.
    Retainer wall.
    Gravel.
    Fire pit.
    Set the world on fire.
    Hang out with family/friends

Life is just problems between parties 🥵

Make an oasis. Put plant beds around the border. With a bench/sitting area/pergola in the middle. Flowers and vines for privacy and enjoyment.

Food. And flowers for the bees to pollinate your food. I’d put a couple of blueberry pushes in there.

  25. StockExchanger

    Hear me out
Layer of red clay bricks on top of it a Fire pit surrounded by curve seats

  26. filthypoor

Could be a good spot for a rain garden if it’s ~10 ft from a downspout

  27. Leut_Aldo_Raine

Sunken fire pit! Build some nice seating and some planters and it’ll be awesome.

  28. GoodBike4006

Consider creating a bioswale pit to collect your rainwater. This allows plants and soil to naturally filter the runoff before it returns to the groundwater, helping manage drainage and support the environment.

  29. Sunken living room fire pit- an ode to the 70’s. I mean the grass looks like that shitty green shag carpet of yesteryear…

  30. brenjgard

You could fire make a nice fire pit. They have “smokeless” pit plans to run airflow underneath to help with combustion. With gravel, sand, patio bricks or stone you’ll be almost filled back up.

  31. No_Report_4781

The laziest way to fill it is to put all your grass clippings and leaf litter in the hole. The one in your yard.

  32. Stand a bunch of enormous stones vertically around the edge of it

  33. DeluxeTwenty47

Make a border with stones, put in a Japanese maple nearby, install bottom layer of pea gravel on top of drainage, fill hole with sand and have a zen garden.

  34. thecrankything

Garden? Flowerbed? Ornamental pond for koi fish? Disappeared? Think about what you’re interested in, then go from there. Some things are a lot of work. Some things are pretty easy. Odds are you’ll always be able to see a circle there, they usually don’t fill in and disappear like you may want. Good luck, I’m sure you will figure it out

  35. No_Recognition7426

Fire pit with paver stones around it?

  36. TheThirteenthApostle

    20ft diameter, you say?

Lay flagstone around the perimeter about 2′ wide (this will be seating). From the edge of the flagstone, dig a trench about 2′ wide, 18″ deep. pile the dirt along the perimeter to shore up your backrest a little. Lay flagstone for your back rest. Lay flagstone around the Fire pit in the (now raised) middle platform.

You now have a killer conversation pit, and it’ll keep you warmer than a traditional firepit setup. The fire will heat the rocks, the rocks will hold the heat and warm the pit.
