Grows on burnt or disturbed ground. The flowers can be used to make a nice cordial and the dried leaves can be used to counterfeit black tea (if you ever want to do a ye olden crime)
EDIT – forgot my fav bit of trivia: it starts blooming from the base of the flower spike around midsummer, and the flowers creep up the spike until onset of autumn (roughly early – mid september). So you can use it as a clock to see how much more summertime you have!

fireweed. when i lived in alaska we would watch summer turn to fall on the fireweed. also, reminded us which salmon were running

In Alaska where it grows all over the place, the word was when the top of the fireweed blooms, it’s six weeks to winter. Might not work on the Isle of Skye.
