BBC Gardeners’ World host Adam Frost shared how his wife really reacts to the attention he receives from female fans, following an awkward encounterAdam Frost Adam Frost reflected on an awkward encounter with a fan

Gardeners’ World star Adam Frost said he’s often “chucked under the bus” by his long-term wife Sulina when it comes to meeting fans. The presenter admitted the “cap goes on” when he’s off duty, as he claims he isn’t as confident as he may appear when it comes to talking to others.

Discussing being approached by fans in particular, Adam said of his wife: “She just chucks me under the bus, she thinks it’s really hilarious. I just go ‘help’. I suppose I come across as being, you know, I talk on the tele and I talk on the stage, and I’m reasonably sort of confident at that kind of stuff, but actually I’m not great with it.”

Recalling one encounter with a female fan that left him red-faced, he added: “I was at a show and a lady suggested to me that I should do audio books and I said, ‘Ah well, yeah, I’m dyslexic so it’s not really my thing’.

“And she literally said to me, that, I’m going to try and put this in the nicest possible way, that my voice did certain things and obviously she could take the audio books to bed at night.”

Laughing as he recalled the awkward interaction, he said he could only imagine how “pale” he must’ve looked at the time, while in shock. He added to Round and About Magazine: “I came out with something really classic like you know, ‘Oh, that’s nice’.”

Adam went on to say that additionally he could feel himself “getting a little bit quicker” as he was walking away.

While such female attention could spark issues in a relationship or marriage, Adam said his wife finds it funny.

Quizzed on the weirdest gardening query he’s received, while promoting his tour earlier this year, he continued: “The weirdest thing has been dealing with people knowing who you are and just… well, I’ve been more or less propositioned in supermarkets in a romantic way, which is rather bizarre for a 50-something bloke that’s married with four kids.

“It’s charming that I get recognised but that attention is weird! Some of the things that ladies have said to me, if I’d said to a lady, they’d cause quite a lot of bother but if you’re a bloke you have to laugh! To be fair Mrs Frost thinks it’s hilarious.”

Adam went on to say that despite a few odd encounters, people are mostly “lovely” adding: “And the other side of that is I do feel semi-adopted by so many people which has been incredible.

“I just rocked up on telly and didn’t think anybody would take any notice let alone this. That’s one of the things with the tour – I didn’t think anyone would turn up! Then they did and then we even had to extend it. It’s humbling.”

Gardeners’ World airs tonight at 8pm on BBC Two.
