Eastern PA

New to lawn care, have a little over 35,000sq ft of grass that’s in decent shape and looking for something to help get me started with maintenance while I’m learning the ropes.

I saw Scotts 4 step program advertised at the local hardware store and it seemed like an easy way to cover all my bases.

It’ll cost about $700 for all 4 products. Is this worth the cost or is my money better spent elsewhere?

Prodiamine DG and get the big jug. That will last you at least 5 years for your pre-emergent. Find a local supply store that sells urea, I can get 50# bags here in Western PA for $25. For weeds use liquids. The bundle is overpriced as is, but for that amount of land, it’s insane. Only real good use bag is the blue in spring and you could use the red fall bag all season.

They work pretty well for me.

Nice thing about the products are they’re very straight forward and beginner friendly.

It works well and is simple, but you’re going to pay more for the brand name and the simplicity. If you don’t want to pay that much you could likely get the active ingredients directly and apply them instead, but that takes a little bit more work.

Me? I’m lazy and just use the Scott’s products.

IMO it’s a great start into lawn care. That’s how I started. Then I began to gain knowledge about other products and then experimented as I understood more.

I used the Scott’s 4 step from ACE hardware and usually in the spring they have a sale on all 4 if you buy together. I have a 5,000 sq ft lawn and the 4 bags ran me $90 total. It looks like 15,000 sq ft bags are $290 for the set. That’s seems in line with what you’re looking at too.

Granular post-emergent weed killer doesn’t work that great, but if the lawn is in decent shape then this should have respectable results.

Lawn care is mostly about consistency – mowing when you need to and sticking to a logical fert regiment (like this program).

Garbage…like all 4 step programs. And definitely do NOT buy a Scotts spreader.

Waste of money. Better products in stand alone form

  8. I have been using Scott’s four step program for the last 15 years and my lawn is beautiful

I’ve learned to avoid weed and feed unless you have a serious problem. I didn’t really have a problem(small patches of clover here and there) and it did more harm than good for me
