Update from a previous post We were able to hire our original excavator to add boulders. I think he did a pretty good job!

Absolutely no idea where you are but I think you need more rocks

It looks good but I don’t see it lasting long!

Are the lower boulders just plopped on loose gravel? I may be wrong, but the front of first layer typically needs to be buried mostly below grade for stabilization of the entire wall…..? It looks complete exposed 🙁

I guess you’ll know more after the first few big rainstorms.

I feel like the boulders shouldn’t be stacked on top of each other as the cracks line up for a blow out. They should be alternating each level best as possible. The top 2nd to left looks like it’ll slide out but I can’t see the whole thing. The spacing is large where backfill can wash out from rain causing potential settling of your wall in an incorrect way. (Ex trail dry stack retaining wall person)

this is just not well done. i’m not saying it won’t stay put but this is amateurish. “settling backward” is not confidence-inspiring; you don’t build walls that need to “settle”.

  7. Better to use wire cages filled with smaller rocks .. Gabion Basket… then face them in wood or stone to your taste.. lots of info online as to how to do this .. it’s the best solution and much cheaper

This is called “future rock slide” wall.

We had a wall similar to that in Breckenridge built also by our excavator in 2014. It had to be inspected and approved by an engineer as it was over ~3′ tall and thus passed inspection. It never did move. First course is in the ground. Can’t post a pic unfortunately as option is not available.
