By the time I got my phone out there was only a third of what it was in the beginning. They were at the very bottom of my pile (which was nice and HOT) and there were just thousands of them. Is this a good sign or a bad sign?

They just look like pill bugs (roly-polies).
They’re great in your pile for breaking it down.

Rollie polly are anthropods and they love woody materials that decompose. Also springtails are beneficial but look similar to thrips. Also oribatid mites and predatory nematodes are your friends.
