I’m moving in October and I cannot rehome or leave my precious 5’5” monstera behind. Any tips on moving larger plants?

  1. I moved with a 12’ fiddle leaf fig. Movers wrapped brown paper (from a roll) around the branches and foliage (think like how they do Christmas trees in a way). And stuffed the paper into the top of the planter to try and keep the soil there. This allowed them to maneuver it through the doors and hallway with minimal damage. Think I lost 2 leaves or so.

In the moving truck, try not to let it roast in there this time of year. Last in, first out of the truck.

  2. Be careful cuz I had monstera that got moved in the moving truck and it was completely black by the time I saw it again. All my other plants were fine, though.

I loaded my 6ft rubber tree into my van and moved 14 hours to a different state. She was a little damaged because I had to lay her sideways but bounced back quick

I have a jade that my grandma got from my grandpa in the 40s. She’s huge. I rented a flat bed Uhaul and strapped her on there, then drove back roads going like 15mph.. It took forever…

Wrap from bottom up and point the leaves upward. Most plants will “flex” well if you do it that way. They sell some wrap products on amazon.

I had to do a completely separate trip and use the U haul for my monstera that was 7 foot at the time. My smaller plants got their own car ride

We do you spray on the leaves there? I’m assuming that’s the bottle I’m seeing.

The best plants I’ve ever received in the mail had lightly damp paper towels on the soil, a Saran Wrap shell around the pot and soil secured with packing tape, fiber fill to support leaves, then a thin sheet of bubble wrap, and finally an outer shell of flexible cardboard also secured with packing tape. The ones shipped like this show up in great condition and experience very little shock.

I just did this recently, OP! Halfway across the country, 4 days of driving! 🫠 I have a relatively sizable collection, including a monstera in a 5 gallon pot, a 4 foot tall trellised pothos in a 2 gallon pot, several 1 gallon babies, and about 40 under a gallon
    Here’s what I did:

-don’t water at all for a few days–make sure they are THIRSTY (you’ll see why, I’m not a monster)

-intentionally rented a truck that was “too big”

-loaded all our other stuff first– and strap it all down really really good

-plants went in last about an hour or so before we left, big pots first- strap them down, too!

-we had one of those shelving units made of squares- we laid it down flat and used each square to hold 1 one gallon pot

-smaller plants were placed in costco produce boxes (you can get them totally free, even if you arent a member- just ask–im sure walmart will also do it)

-delicate plants rode in the car with me, one in a cup holder, the rest in a produce box in the back seat, though I recommend the floor if you can

-water thoroughly in the truck! It helps if you can park on an incline

-drive about 5 miles under the speed limit!

-enjoy the greenhouse effects! I didn’t lose a single plant, and everyone was reeaally happy when we got to our destination.

I was terrified I’d lose everything, so I didn’t even look in the back of the truck while we were traveling- I was horrified of what my imagination was telling me I’d end up seeing. Babies were the first thing off the truck, and everyone was super happy! One thing I wish I’d considered beforehand (a month or so) and will be doing if I ever have to do this again–repot what needs to be repotted into soil with your new location’s environment in mind. I moved from CO to MN, so big big difference in humidity.

    Edit for clarity

You should just give that to me and not risk it.

Hot damn that’s a good lookin’ plant.

Butcher paper on large rolls. Roll like an ice cream cone from bottom up, on an angle. Tape the outside.

I moved with my monstera and I added a bit of bubble wrap on top of the soil and then used a big thing of packing wrap and wrapped the entire pot so that I could lay it on its side in the back of my car. I put the back seats down and it fit just fine! Also made sure to cover up the windows (you can use towels or blankets) so that the sun wouldn’t scorch the leaves. Traveled 6+ hours in the car with little to no cosmetic damage.
