We have a visitor who’s flown in out of the blue. No idea how to look after it. Any ideas would be very welcome. There are no ponds nearby to take it to.

It flew in, it’ll fly out. Giving water was kind and it’s had a drink. You don’t need to do any more unless there’s a reason it can’t leave or fend for itself.

Ducks fly all over the place, found one up in a forest one year, waddling about the bit where the kids had their picnics miles from water.

Give it a bag of Quavers and a can of Vimto.
He’ll be well chuffed.

If you want to feed it don’t feed it bread. Give it lettuce or peas in the water

It’s a mature mallard hen.
Ducks will eat grass, as well as pond weeds, but are omnivores and will forage slugs, snails, and insects. They will also eat seeds, raw cereals like oats and barley, peas, broccoli, greens etc.. in very limited quantities.

We had a pair (Importunate Imelda and Shy Sean) for about 10 days last month. They appreciated the water, and scarfed up ordinary Tesco birdseed laid on a mat on the ground. Good times, good times. Nice people / ducks.

Wave some plumb sauce and rice pancakes in its general direction.

Can you hear a mummy duck going “quack, quack, quack, quack” from over a faraway hill? It’ll probably head back at the end of the song.

You don’t look after it. That’s the point. Wild animals look after themselves. Just enjoy it’s visit (from a distance) while it lasts.

Don’t take it to a pond or lake anywhere near other ducks, the existing ones will tear it to pieces. They take it turns to chase it mainly underwater and when the new duck gets tired they beat the crap out of it. Ducks are brutal.
Just let it do it’s thing, we had one that used to wander into next door to watch the snooker with them. It will go when its ready.

Big bowl of water it can duck it’s head under is all it really needs. Throw a few frozen peas in the water if you want, but it’ll figure shit out and fly off again soon enough.

Probably just needs a rest

Op, my next door neighbor feeds the ducks every summer for the last 10 years. I know you don’t want to encourage it to stay based on your comments, but consider that having a genuine visit every year may be a cool thing. Just sayin

I reckon it can look after itself.
