here are five things you need to know about growing hostas the first one is not all hostas take the same amount of sunlight or shade green and gold foliage varieties can usually take a bit more Sun than the blue ones blue hostas have a waxy coating on the surface of the leaf and the thicker the coating the Bluer the hosta but rain or touching the leaf or um too much sunlight can burn this waxy coating off so make sure you give your blue hostas plenty of shade next not all hostas grow well in USDA zones 9 and 10 hostas need a certain number of chill hours or temperatures at 45° Fahrenheit and below in order to grow well the number of hours they need depends on the variety so while most hostas will grow in those zones if they if they need more chill hours when they do come back they’ll be weak and they could die out so if you’re growing in if you’re growing hostas in those Zones look for guacamole stained glass and Grand Tiara those are just a few of the varieties that will grow well in zones 9 and 10 another thing to remember about growing hoses is some of them have fragrant flowers the hasta plantagen is the species that has really um big white tubular flowers and they bloom later in the summer and they have a great fragrance if you can’t find the species look for some of its hybrids fragrant bouquet invincible and royal wedding and if you want to grow miniature hostas those are so cute at the edge of your border but not all of them are great border plants some of them need a sharper drainage you can grow them in a rock garden or in a trough and look for um cherry tomato or Dragon Tails they’d be great in a container in your garden and lastly hostas are an easy plant to divide so if you want more of your favorite variety dig it up split it into pieces plant it around the Garden or share it with your friends
