Previously on the backyard build. In about 12 hours, we should be sitting underneath our beautiful new pergola. You got it. And if you decide you don’t like this, we can’t take it off and you won’t see any like screws. Saying it like that insinuates that I frequently not like stuff. It is though. That’s the truth. Freak sakes. What’s going on here? This looks amazing, babe. It just needs a coat of stain and then the pavers and then the pond and some landscaping. Oh, and the landscaping. That’s right. And then this area is finished. That’s what you said. All [Music] right. [Music] Welcome to episode 4 of the backyard build. Today we stay in defense. Yay. You know from Despicable Me. Tonight we steal the moon. You’re my little minion and I am Grrew. You are Grrew. [Music] Submerge suction tube into paint. Point gun. Pull and hold trigger. [Music] Can I try? Sure. [Music] How’s that? Oh, what do you think? That doesn’t look good at all. Here, you do it. Well, I don’t know. Look how splotchy mine is. [Music] Why does it look like that? Maybe we’ll let it soak in. Yeah, that’s really bad. It’s starting to drip. I’m go get the brush. Overspray check. We’re good. Oh, this is thick. Maybe maybe it needs to be turned down. I think I just need to go faster. That’s working good. Oh, yeah. Looks really good. [Music] The pants. Where well? [Music] [Music] Okay. All done. Yeah. Done with some despair. There’s a couple spots where it like just looks a little bit like lighter than others, but it’s all going to be painted in front of, so I think it looks really good. Like it looks pretty good, right? Mhm. Really good. No sense putting more on. What’ you call me? That was good, babe. You recording that? Yeah. Just for reference, that fence took an hour and 15 minutes. I would still I would be doing it all day long. You’d be doing it for a week, probably. No, it’s time for the pergola. This is going to suck. That was way worse than I got you. It doesn’t matter. It all went down like crap. I know. You’re lucky I was going to do that. I’ll get you when you least expect it. And then you’re going in the pool head first. Okay. Are you going to help me stay in this or no? No. I want I’ve told you I will watch you suffer. Please. I could spray a lot of it. Posts, the beams, the sides. You might just have to touch up in the cracks and stuff. All right, I’ll go get the stain. That’s probably good. Okay, that’s good. Okay, that’s good. We’re using the color tugboat for this pergola. Tugboat by Bear is my personal favorite stain color. We’ve used a bunch of different stain colors. Like this fence color, I think I told you, is cedar, which is the same color we did on our fence by the pool. I just wanted something that looked like wood because it’s going to all get landscaped again. So, something that’s easy to maintain. Tugboat is what’s on our fire pit in case you’ve ever wondered. It’s also, where else have we used it? The fire pit bench is also the old front porch. Yeah. Make sure to put a drop cloth down, eh? I don’t want this all covered in paint. Good one, babe. Good luck staining this thing. You want me to see if I got a foam roller for you? So, fun fact, in case you’ve ever wondered, when it comes to doing a project like this, like staining or painting something, we don’t listen to music. We do the whole project in silence, which makes it kind of even worse. But, we do it in silence because we’re filming at the same time. If we do it with music, I can’t use any of that audio in the video. So, we just kind of suffer through in silence, which is not an issue for Andrew because he does flights on airplanes with no headphones. know nothing. He just like sits and basks in his own thoughts. [Music] You’re going to help me. I guess, babe. For a little bit. You should have. You start on that post. I’ll start on this post. And then we’ll join together and kiss in the middle. [Music] [Applause] I feel like it’s not really making a difference. Well, this is just the first coat. The second coat will Oh my god. Two coats. Two coats, baby. [Music] Oh my god. No freaking way. I found a key. I found a key. No. I’m manifesting finding a key during this series. Andrew is manifesting finding a safe. So, comment which one you think we’re gonna find first. That was just sitting on the top of that pile. We dug that up like a week ago. I manifested this. That’s crazy. Where’s the safe? There’s a safe somewhere under here for sure. Look, that’s crazy. It was sitting right here on the top of this dirt pile, which means we dug it out while we were doing the footings. Pretty crazy, eh? That is crazy. [Music] Hello. [Music] How’s that? Looks really good. Does it? Yeah, it does. Oh, yeah. It looks great now that it’s soaked in, right? Looks really good. Oh my god. Thank God. It’s paver day. PA day. Paver day. Holy smokes. £24,000 is the total of this stuff. So, a news article just came out starring Aley. Curious dog insists on being involved in every step of coup’s renovation. That is so cute. And he has no idea he’s even a viral sensation. [Music] Want to give him a paper haul? Yeah. Your hair looks crazy. Here’s my framer. I was trying to get in the garage to get my sun hat in his loft. But anyway, today we received our pavers. We know. Okay. What we have here is the Oaks Landscape Products. It’s called the Market PA. The color we went with is Serengeti. That’s what we’re doing as our walkway down there. We also bought the same size pavers to do a border, which is the Onyx black. It’s basically just going to go straight along both sides and the front there. These are our beautiful natural stone steps in the color Kota Black by Vanis Stones. They’re 48 in wide, 16 in deep, and 6 in high. So, it gives us a 6 in step. That’s kind of why we went with the onyx border because the black uh pavers are going to butt into there. So, it kind of looks like it wraps all the way around. This is our wallpaper or wall stone. Those are so pretty. They’re awesome. It’s by Unilock. They’re called Brussels. That’s what’s going to go around the circle area. This is our flag stone or jumbo flag stone that I like to call it. They range from 3 to 4 in thick and they’re just random sizes. If we want to use them, like let’s say we want a smaller piece, the guy at the yard said literally just kind of make a score cut with a saw on the one side and hit it with a sledgehammer. Yeah, I saw that came off. It’s pretty cool, eh? That’s those. They kind of match the armor stone really well, too. So, it kind of ties it all in together. These are the pavers for the circular seating area. They’re the same brand and same color as the wall stone. It’s three sizes. You have your small, medium, and large. Yeah, Brussels um Sierra is the color. This is really pretty. I had posted a video and I asked um for opinions to do either flag stones or pavers. And we decided to do pavers, but they have like a very um kind of traditional look to them. Like nice rough edges. Very different from what we did at the front of the house in terms of like the soft edges here. And yeah, like they’re kind of roughed up a little. Like they’re supposed to look a little bit older, like aged, I guess. And we technically are still doing flag stone. We’re just doing it in other places. Yeah, it’s just it’s nice to do an interlock for a seating area so that your chairs aren’t rocking and like weeds aren’t growing in between them. It’s just a tripping hazard really. See the difference? Now you can see how light they are. But yeah, so that’s the pavers and that’s the border. And out front we did the border. This way it’s called like soldier out here. We’re doing it that way just as like a sailor. Can I tell them we’re doing a herring bone? Yeah. So that’s what we decided on, right? Is that how you lay it? I’ve never done it, so I don’t know. But anyway, is that right? No. See, this is where I mess up. Let me look at a picture because I’ve tried to do herring bone before and ended up being chevron. Actually, I don’t need a picture. I’ll figure it out. Yeah, that’s right, babe. Yeah, that makes sense. Um, do you want me to show over here? Your hair is hilarious. I know. It’s cuz I dunked my head in the pool because the main walkway is 100 ft long. What I’m going to do is in the center of that walkway is where I’m going to start the herring bone. So that it’s the same on either side of the walkway up there. over here. It doesn’t matter because we’re just going to bring it out as far as we want to make it so that like this cut here with the border is a full pa and the same over there. If we center it here, it’ll work out over there because it’ll still end the same. I’ve got my screed rails here. They’re 1 in galvanized gas line. That’s about the thickness that you want either your bedding sand or your your high performance bedding, which is like a chip stone, but we’re going to screed it. And then I’m going to set up a string in the center of this walkway which is 4T 3. So when you start that string line will be you want to come see to make sure that you stay straight. Your string line should hit all these corners to see. And that’ll make sure that you’re not like kind of going like that. Right. But that’s it. Pretty easy, right? So easy. [Music] That was to go 120 ft and do this little 14 ft radius. Let’s see how much. That doesn’t look like very much. I think that we’ll probably just get the lower area done and that’ll be it. [Music] So, this is it. It’s basically a really small rock. It’s easier to level than these big ones. It’s just got all little fine ones in it. No sand or dust. [Music] Okay. So, that’s perfectly level. We can dump enough here for me to screed this. Okay. [Music] [Music] [Applause] Maybe I’ll do a front angle. Oh, cuz I’m bent over. Yeah. Fore [Music] [Music] [Music] I’ve got my center line nice and tight. What I’ve done is I put my square down on that string as well, so that I know that I’m square. So, I know all of these ones to line up like that. Now, what does herring bone look like again? [Music] Let me find my phone. You go like this, right? They they intersect each other like that stacks like this. Like this. Or I can do that. Right. And they keep going. Okay. So if I go like this right now, that point and this point should both be on that. Right. Like that. Yeah. Both the corners need to line up. And I want it to just touch that square. So, just like that. Mhm. Right. Right through the corners. This goes here. Yeah. Yeah. I I think Hold on. Let me find my phone. Yeah, that’s right. So, this is going to go right on that corner there. Correct. Yep. And then that goes like this. And then when you look at it, that string should go right through there. Right. Right. But then so does this next one go like this? Yes, it does. Ex. Yeah, you need to Yeah, you’re basically just repeating the opposite side. See, it like the same order goes. Okay. Over and over. So, yeah. So, like that’s going to go like that. Mhm. For sure. For sure. There’s no other way you could put it. Otherwise, it would just be following a straight line, right? And then this is going to go here, right? Yep. This would go here. Yes. This is going to go here. Sorry. Uh-huh. And then this is going to go here, right? That should line up, right? Yeah. Just like that. That looks like herring bone. No, it is. Okay. Yeah, that’s right. E. Mhm. It’s so deceiving. You have to look at it like rowby row. [Music] Oh, frig’s sakes. [Music] How’d I do? Not good. [Music] Uh, for some reason I mean like they they might just be loose because of what they are. They’re so little. Yeah, that’s what I mean. Like you don’t think you need a rubber mallet? What? To hit each one? Yeah. The guy I watched, he was doing that. He was tapping each one in. Each one? Yeah. Okay. Well, maybe I should then. I’ll go get a rubber mallet. That’s what the guy was doing that you watched. He was tapping each one. Halt. Don’t come this way. Let’s go this way. Everybody this way. Daddy’s going to flip if you step on his sand or his HPB. Aino. Aino. Aly. Stay. I’m sweating like crazy right now. Are you? Yeah. I underestimated working in 40° weather every day. We only have ourselves to blame. That’s it. Oh, tell them to like, comment, and subscribe. Yes. If you’re enjoying this, you like, comment, and subscribe to see more of me sweating. Us sweating, I guess. Yeah, I could do this every day. You having fun? I love doing this. This goes here, right? Mhm. [Music] I love the sound of this. It’s like ASMR. This is going so much better than episode 19. That looks good. No, looks really good. Oh, but then we have the four there. I I could put another small one here like that. But then it’s not very random. Like I could put another square. No, I can’t because then this I have to put this here. I have to. Okay. [Music] [Music] Yeah, it’s not the best there. Yep. Pretty easy, eh? It’s like doing a big puzzle. [Music] God, I hope this works out. I’m having fears. What do you mean? That this isn’t square. [Music] [Music] [Music] You have like a curly bang. I don’t even care. This seems like a good spot to end. I’d say so. I want to thank you guys for watching another episode of the backyard build. Check in next week because this project should be finished by next week. By next Sunday, this interlock should all be done all the way up. Right. You are then [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause]

Why didn't you stain the beams before assembling the pergola?
when the video started I thought they were going to stain that fence by hand. so relieved to see the sprayer come out
Did you guys try using headphones/earbuds for music? This way you can film without messing up the audio
Wats the color stained you guys used on the fence and the pergola
What kind of sprayer do you have ?
That key looks a bit like a safety deposit box key.

Rawdogging a airplane flight is a pro man move. When you ask him if he misses you he will say I’m glad you’re back but he’s good just being alone.
I've done that before – you make it look easy.
You can back brush the spray.
You two work so well together. ❤
This is incredible. We are expanding our back yard deck under our new pergola. We’re in sync with you two. The only difference is we’re 30 years older than you are. Just the two of us. We watched “Ditchin the Split together on our big screen TV. You are soooo talented and we’re Canadian too. ❤❤❤❤
