I bought a serviceberry a month ago at a local native plant sale, and the deer have been destroying it (allegedly).
So I put together a cage so the poor thing can at least grow a leaf or two.

The deer (and their degenerate rabbit associates) have also halfway destroyed my two new rain gardens, so I had to build sad little makeshift fences around those too. Sigh.

My Clethra alnifolia looked very similar after my dog developed a taste for its leaves. It’s a sad twig with tiny leaves now.

It’s still recovering (the plant, my dog is fine) and I have high hopes for it next year if nothing else tries to munch on it.

    Excellent!
I wrap poultry wire around tomato cages to keep the rabbits off my baby trees and shrubs.

Not trying to 🌧️ on you but rabbits can squeeze through gaps like 1-2 inches. Just so you’re aware.

I planted 3 serviceberries and have had the same issue. The deer have even knocked down the cages to get at the plants. I won’t even mention what those menaces are doing to my vegetable garden.

  5. “allegedly..” no due process for those motherfuckers, they know what they did

Advise…throw a driveway marker thingy in through the cage. The deer pawed at mine to get to the trillium. So now even cages need stakes.

  7. Lol that dear is looking at you like “ohh I didn’t realize this was war”

I had to cage and fence everything in my garden. Our deer is only referred to as Strawberry since this was the first victim (and second me, because after munching up on all my strawberry flowers I had a sad and strawberry-deprived 2022)

  9. This whole post made me laugh so hard. Good luck to you and your young charge!
