CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – What used to be an empty plot of land along Pennsylvania Avenue is now being transformed into a community oasis, with the help of Faith in Action and volunteers.

Jennifer Waggener, executive director of Faith in Action for The Greater Kanawha Valley, said, “So we designed this little park area and this little park space to be just a little space of calm and beauty and we hope that the neighborhood will come by and have their lunch at a picnic table and just be part of the neighborhood.”

To build the community oasis, volunteers have stepped in to help Faith in Action bring their vision to life.

“We are building a community garden, we are partnering with Faith In Action and we are a church group from Cincinnati, so we are all youth, students seventh through 12th grade,” volunteers Kortnie Mosby and Lana Carpenter said.

Waggener said Faith in Action provides support to the older neighbors in the community.

With this new park, they hope to mitigate isolation that so many people fall into.

“And maybe do some forward-thinking work to prevent that in the future by helping people make connections, and this just seemed like a natural perfect fit for that,” Waggener said.

This park will have a vegetable garden for the community, a free library box for book lovers, and a big flower garden.
