Doing a job for an old lady on my street who said her backyard is a "little" overgrown with weeds. Any advice or tips would be super helpful

“Some folks call it a Sling Blade”

Cut it down most of the way with a trimmer, rake and remove, then mow over

I am more worried about collecting it than cutting it

Definitely a weed whacker and a trash can

So I do houses like this all the time. Here is what ive found to be the most efficient method in my experience.

    1. Weedwack everything down or rent a brush hog. (I have a sthil kombi 131r. Fortunately, I have every attachment.)

    2. Pick up any larger debris that will affect mower blades.

    3. If you have access to a larger stand on mower and can get it in there, great. If not, I would suggest push mowing at the highest setting and bag and barrel. Drop the deck down a couple and rinse and repeat until desired height.

    4. I always blow through with a blower at the end. Pick up an extra debris. This will also lift up grass/weeds that may be laid over. If you dont have a blower, the trusty dusty rake comes out.

    5. Only if after blowing or raking, you see, it needs to be cut one more time do it, just cut in a different direction.

It’s kind of nice. Maybe just mow a path to your shed and let nature be.

Pull the tall down to the roots. Weed eat the rest

Weed wack, clear, till soil, cover with weed barrier for at least 8 weeks.

Only solution is to buy goats and let them go to town

Walk it to check for obstacles, then lunge at it with an old lawn mower.

Scythe! If you can find one, anyways. Elsewise, yeah, string trimmer/weed eater, etc. Rake, gloves, long sleeves and pants with hefty boots so you can just grab and stuff the junk into bins or bags without having to worry about scratches.

If you want it gone, use a shovel or garden fork to break up the soil all through the area. Then the weeds will pull easier and you will likely get the taproots as well. If you dampen the soil a little, it may help depending on composition.

Good gloves, and pull from the base of the stalk, close to the ground, after loosening the soil, and it will be done right.

I know , maybe mow your lawn on a regular basis.

Protect yourself from insects while doing this. Ticks are serious shit.

  17. That looks like wild parsnips – cover up head to toe, don’t let that touch your skin, and expose it to the sun you’ll blister list a mad bastard.
Pull from the bottom to get the tap root before it goes to seed. Good luck.

If only there was a device to whak all those weeds away

Gas mower, blade sharpened, push the handle towards the ground, get the front wheels 12″

    Push, bog, back up, push.

Drop the front wheels sometimes when going backwards.

Be warned, pulling a mower is dangerous if you slip. Wear hiking shoes for traction and be double careful.

Then mow as normal, probably half a path at a time till all is well mulched.

Weed wack it all down removeall the cuttings, spray the whole yard and kill it off, will probably take a few applications, then over seed and water. It will probably be an ongoing battle the next few years to keep the weeds from growing back but each season it will get easier as the grass grows thick and deep roots grow. Pre and pist emergent is a must yearly.

Let the natives stay and give the local fauna food and shelter. Cut it down in the spring in a big cleanup and repeat next year with paths or mulched spaces.

String trimmer. Herbicide. Propane torch to incinerate.
When using the propane torch, observe all safety protocols, and expect a neighbor to call the fire department. 50% of the time i use mine they get called. But, as many times ans they have responded, Ive never been ticketed or fined. This might be a controversial tool but its effective like no other, and my inner child is a pyro so its always a good time.
