What type of sunflowers are growing wild all over the city
I planted several varieties of sunflowers and they all looked fantastic and then all died. But I see these all over the place healthy and thriving. Are these Mexican sunflowers?
They look like mine which I am convinced grew from black oil sunflower seeds I fed to birds years ago and have been popping up all over my yard for years. I let them.

Common Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

Probably common sunflower, helianthus annuus. It’s native and grows wild nationwide.
I’ll second the Common Sunflower response. The ones that grow in my yard always seem to get twice as tall as the ones in random fields, though, and I’m not sure why. They always fall over by now.

Those are Jenn’s Birthday Flowers. I know this because in 1995, my friend Danny brought me a handful that he had clearly just torn out the the ground and said, “Happy Birthday, these are your birthday flowers.”

Idk hut that made me think about how crazy the ones that used to grow at the sunshine community garden. They probably still do but I haven’t been that way in a while. Really something to see.

The last couple of years we had just one big sunflower that would grow in our yard- 7ft tall. This year we got 3 that are smaller sized- between 4 and 5 tall, and 1 that is barely 1 ft above the ground. I assumed they came from seeds drops from the squirrels that invade the bird (squirrel) feeder.

*Helianthus annuus*, the common sunflower — go figure
FYI (BONAP and Wikipedia claim that) they are listed as a noxious weed in Texas (but this appears not to be true)
Edited for accuracy, pending further research
They’re… wild sunflowers.

Mexican sunflowers (tithonia) are a little different. They usually have orange flowers and grow more like a shrub:
