RHS app seems to think it’s edible from the photo identification but I just want to make sure 🙂 also if it is how long do I wait for it to be ripe? Thanks 🙏

An apple will be edible, but it might not be palatable.

The only way to find out will be teste it.

It looks like an eater rather than a cooker, but I don’t really know. I doubt it is ripe yet. All you can do is try a bit. I’d wait for the end of August at least. Some might be ripe then, some not until later. AS u/Sweet_Focus6377 said, probably edible, might not taste nice.

Yes it is an apple, yes it is edible.

Eating apples tend to be smaller and sweeter, cooking apples bigger and more tart but there is no clear cut dividing lie. Some like sharp tangy apples , some insist on only very sweet. It is up to you.

This one looks like an unripe eating apple from here but I am no expert and definitely could not give you a definitive ID.

Depending how many apples there actually are, you could pull one and take a slice off to taste.

Also read up on apple tree pruning so that you can get the best fruit from it next year.

  4. If it is a cooking apple, it is much more acidic and sour than dessert apples. Take a bite, but I reckon it will be a Bramley’s cooking apple, which you then make apple pie, crumble, and sauce from.

Unless you’re called Snow White, all apples in this country are edible. Whether it’s going to taste good as another matter.

Eating a tree will probably ruin your teeth, but the fruit from it will be fine.

  7. When it’s ripe it will come off easily if you lift it and tilt, so the “knee joint” at the top of the stalk is flexed slightly. And the pips inside will be brown not white.

If you get windfalls though, they look big enough to use in a crumble with the blackberries that are just appearing, even if they would have grown up to be eaters.

Definitely not ripe yet though, my apple tree doesn’t tend to be ready until September at least.

It’s an eating apple, not a cooking apple (ignore those saying otherwise), the white spots give it away. Apples are really early this year, but it definitely won’t be ready yet. When they’re ready, they should come off of the tree with a twist. The real trick is to shake them, if you can hear the pips rattle, it’s ready, although, this is virtually impossible to do when they’re on the tree. Visually, the pips are white when unripe and darken when ripe (again, impossible to see without removing it from the tree and cutting it open) – most of these suggestions are to help you avoid biting into an unripe apple, which isn’t terrible, just very tart.

If the apple comes away from the stem cleanly when you lift it, then it is ripe.

  11. I’ve started to get apples this week, which is very early but we did have odd weather this year. Do the twist test to see – if they come off easily, they’re ready

Try it. If it’s too bitter up, cook with it.

It’s ripe in a few weeks. Try eating it then.

I have one too, the fruits are edible and delicious 😋

My understanding is that fruit is ripe when it’s just about to fall from the tree. Give it a gentle tug and if it comes free from the branch easily then it’s ripe. If you really have to twist it to get it off, it’s not ready yet.

It will be edible, but it might not be ready yet. How to tell if an apple is ready to be picked – If the apple is ripe, it’s getting ready to drop in the near future, so will be easy to separate from the tree. Lift it very slightly upwards, like you are aiming to make its stalk horizontal. But don’t force it, be gentle. You can also try twisting the apple slightly, don’t force it. If it doesn’t come away easily, it’s not ready and it will be bitter. If it comes away, you can cut the apple open to check further if you like. Ripe apples will have dark brown pips. If they are still white, it wasn’t ready. If you have done all these checks and it looked OK, but it’s still quite bitter, then it’s a cooking apple. Still edible, but cooked with sugar to make them palatable.
