Can you feel the days getting shorter?

But we’re not done yet!

Cardinal flower is just hitting its stride, nodding onion is about to pop, and steeplebush is starting its first bloom.
Ironweed’s getting ready to launch, rough blazing star is gearing up, and we’re about to see our first great blue lobelia.

And don’t sleep on the asters and goldenrods they’re next.

Pics of all of them in the post!

I planted my cardinal flowers spring a year ago, part of a native plant package I got from a local sale. Didn’t know much about them, and they did basically nothing last summer.

This summer, wow! Maybe my new favorite. I’m going to try to collect seeds to winter sow a ton more.

I’m also waiting for are my asters and goldenrods. The showy goldenrod did great with the bees last summer. I planted some other goldenrods this year, though I won’t be surprised if I don’t get blooms until next year.

What are the white spiky flowers? I saw some along the side of the road the other day and would love to have some in my garden

It’s not over until after Gentiana andrewsii sings.

I actually hosted a garden tour (it was a state wide one) last weekend and was a bit bummed it wasn’t scheduled for August. My garden is truly the most colorful in August!

I love watching the garden roll from one flowering phase to the next. Mine feels like it has several mini-seasons inside each big season as the different flowers begin to blossom and the prior ones die off.
