Bought our first home last year and am at a loss at what to do with this massive field of vines that the last home owner left for us. Our backyard is through the fence on the right, the 25 feet of overgrowth in the middle is still my property, then there's about a few acres of woodlands on the left. The vines have almost completely taken over the first row of trees, although they're still showing signs of life. They grow through our fence every few weeks if we don't bat them back.

Any suggestions as to how to tackle this would be much appreciated.

No worthwhile advice to offer but those look awesome.

The goat people are probably right this time.

Brush killer but….. it works best on new growth. Take a weed eater or hedge trimmer to it all and in about 3 days start spraying.

No joke… have you considered hiring goats? I imagine a small heard would have that cleared in a day or two. Otherwise it’s just hours of itchy elbow grease.

You have a big problem if thats Kudzu. It grows about 60 feet a year and is insanely hard to kill. There are companies that specialize in it. Goats also do a great job of cutting it down but thats all. I dont really have any suggestions other than if its kudzu, Id talk to specialists in your area.

  6. If that’s kudzu, you should have used napalm yesterday.

Learn to swing a machete. And buy a file to sharpen it daily.

Its kudzu, theres nothing ypu can really do… you will go broke trying to kill it. It can grow up to one foot a day.

Hire a professional to rip these out from the roots and then spray to kill it if needed. This is an invasive plant and will relentlessly devour everything. Get it out. Don’t wait.

  10. That is kudzu. It takes over so easily even a little bit of it left will take back over. Cut it in sections and burn what you remove. The good news is it’s going to die back this winter so you can really go to town on it…the bad news is you will have to mow and manage that strip of land or it will be back in one season

Start with goats, move to pulling/ digging it and unfortunately you have to finish with herbicide until it is gone.

Looks like kudzu. Highly invasive and destructive. Get professional help and notify the proper authorities if they don’t already know about it.

If your property is pretty flat under those vines you might be able to clear it yourself by renting a brush hog from Home Depot. There are people that do this type of clearing with forestry mulcher skid steers, can probably take care of it in half a day.

Nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

My uncle in MS used to spray it with diesel and some crazy herbicide

    This was the 80s

I’ve seen this video. Get like a bobcat thingy that has a fork on it that rotates and then treat it like spaghetti

Everyone’s saying kudzu but it kinda looks like porcelain berry to me, oy maybe multiple types of vine. Agree you should get a professional who is experienced with invasive species. And multiple opinions/quotes. It’s probably going to be a multistage process of cutting and herbicide treatment.
