Burpee developed iconic crops like iceberg lettuce and big boy tomatoes at Fordhook Farm in Bucks County.

The farm has been a trial garden to test new crops and flowers for more than a century. Fordhook will be open to the public, Saturday, July 26, for a free open house.

The Burpee Summer Open at Fordhook Farm, 105 New Britain Road, Doylestown, is Saturday, July 26, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Eight gardens will be open at the farm. There will also be talks about the company’s history by author Christopher DeMairo as well as the chance to talk with the company’s horticulture team and visit the Burpee garden shop.

Registration is not required. Sturdy shoes are suggested for the farm, which has rugged terrain.

There have been many changes since Washington Atlee Burpee bought the first 100 acres of the farm in 1888. One of the latest is a refresh of the dawn redwood allée, where Jerry Fritz Garden Design recently added perennials.
