on your porch patio balcony or even your window sill and when you choose the right perennials you’ll get long-lasting color texture and beauty season after season in this video we’re sharing seven of the best perennials for container gardening these plants are not only gorgeous but also tough easy to care for and perfect for anyone looking to grow a vibrant potted garden with minimal effort we’ll cover everything you need to know how they grow what they need clever bonus tips and of course how to use them in your containers for maximum impact so if you’re ready to create a stunning container garden that looks high-end but is easy to maintain you’re in the right place let’s jump in with the very first plant let’s kick things off with a true classic lavender this fragrant perennial brings that soft dreamy Mediterranean vibe to any patio or balcony with its silvery foliage and purple flower spikes it not only looks elegant but also adds a soothing scent that instantly elevates the space plus it’s a natural mosquito repellent and pollinator favorite lavender thrives in full sun and absolutely needs well- drained soil when planting it in a container choose a gritty mix or add sand to your potting blend to mimic its dry native habitat be careful not to overwater let the soil dry out between watering sessions and always ensure proper drainage one of the best things about lavender is its versatility you can harvest the flowers to use in satchets oils or even calming teas and with a light pruning in early spring it will return fuller and more fragrant each year for a sunny patio lavender is a perfect choice to anchor a container it looks stunning when paired with herbs like rosemary or trailing thyme and works beautifully in ceramic or terracotta pots place it by your outdoor seating area and enjoy its scent every time the breeze rolls [Music] in coming up next is deranium rosan and if you’ve ever wished for a plant that just doesn’t quit blooming this one’s for you its violet blue flowers start in early summer and keep going until frost spilling gracefully over container edges like a living waterfall it brings a wild cottage garden charm even if you’re working with nothing more than a small balcony roseanne enjoys full sun to partial shade and likes moist but well- drained soil it’s pretty forgiving if you miss a watering now and then and it doesn’t mind the heat as long as you give it a bit of afternoon shade in warmer regions as a bonus this deranium lowmaintenance and doesn’t need constant deadheading to stay in bloom a mid-season trim is all it takes to keep things looking fresh and full use Rosanne as your go-to spiller and container combos it flows beautifully over the rim of large pots or hanging baskets pair it with upright bloomers like salvia or airy grasses and set it where its trailing blooms can soften edges along walkways on stair steps or front and center on the [Music] patio let’s switch gears a bit with something bold and leafy hosta takes the number three spot for its dramatic foliage and shade loving nature known for its broad textured leaves in shades of green blue and cream hosta can turn any dark corner into a lush calming space it’s a visual anchor in any container garden hostas love partial to full shade and do best in moist well- drained soil when growing them in containers keep the soil evenly moist especially in warmer months while they’re pretty easygoing compact or dwarf varieties are often the best fit for pots an added bonus is that many hostile varieties bloom in midsummer sending up lavender or white flower spikes that attract hummingbirds and with proper care they’ll return every year even in containers just keep them protected in colder months in pots hostas make fantastic thrillers or sturdy fillers their bold leaves pair perfectly with finer textured plants like cucra ivy or Japanese forest grass place them in shaded corners of your porch or in elegant containers by the entryway to create a cool composed [Music] statement taking the fourth spot is Salvia neosa a powerhouse perennial known for its upright spikes of violet blue flowers and aromatic foliage if you’re looking to add height movement and pollinator appeal to your containers this one checks all the boxes it’s tidy long blooming and tough as nails salvia loves full sun and well- drained soil and it’s particularly happy in containers that don’t stay too wet water regularly while it’s getting established then back off it actually prefers drier conditions a quick trim after the first flush of flowers will encourage a fresh wave of blooms later in the season here’s the bonus not only do bees and hummingbirds go crazy for it but rabbits and deer tend to ignore it completely it’s one of those rare plants that looks delicate but acts rugged salvia works best as the central thriller in a container combo surround it with lower mounting plants or trailing bloomers to soften the look set your pot in full sun front porch steps the corner of your deck or along the path where it can catch both light and admiration [Music] at number five effania or conflower brings bold energy to your container garden with its large daisyike blooms and purples pinks and even fiery oranges it’s hard to ignore it’s not just beautiful it’s a native plant that supports pollinators and wildlife too give echanatia full sun and good drainage and it’ll reward you with blooms from midsummer into fall it’s drought tolerant once established so it doesn’t mind a bit of neglect perfect if you’re not the most consistent waterer one of its coolest features the flower heads turn into spiky seed cones that stay interesting long after the pels fade and birds love them just leave them standing through winter for both beauty and function use echanatia as a bold vertical accent in large containers or tall pots it pairs wonderfully with softer textures like nepida creeping thyme or rose and deranium place it where it can shine near entryways sunny patios or even in a pot by your mailbox for instant curb [Music] appeal [Music] sliding into the sixth spot is Setum Autumn Joy a no fuss perennial with chunky succulent leaves and flowerheads that change color throughout the season from rosy pink to rich copper it gives you a natural color story that evolves from late summer through fall even after blooming the dried seed heads hold their shape beautifully into winter sedum is all about sun and drainage it thrives in poor soil and actually prefers being a bit ignored in containers choose a gritty mix and avoid overwatering too much love and it’ll get floppy too little it shrugs it off and keeps going another plus pollinators adore it bees and butterflies flock to the blooms in late summer making it a valuable nectar source when other flowers are fading and if you leave the seed heads up they look sculptural well into the snowy season use Autumn Joy as a filler thriller hybrid it adds structure and mass to modern pots or rustic containers ideal placement bright sunny spots like a gravel patio stone walkway or even rooftop garden where it can soak up the heat and still look amazing [Music] finally rounding out our list at number seven is the ever versatile hukra also known as coral bells while many plants rely on flowers for drama huker brings year- round excitement with its kaleidoscope of leaf colors it’s compact elegant and endlessly useful in containers hukura prefers partial shade but can handle more sun in cooler areas it loves rich well- drained soil and regular water especially in heat just avoid planting too deep keep the crowns slightly above soil level to prevent rot here’s something extra many varieties are semi- evergreen so they’ll carry color into the colder months they’re also deer resistant and very lowmaintenance no constant trimming or deadheading needed in container designs Hukra is a perfect filler with strong visual punch its dense mounding shape balances out tall or trailing plants and its unique leaves add texture and depth tuck it into shaded corners side tables or even group several varieties in a wide pot for a dramatic foliage [Music] display and there you have it seven stunning perennials that absolutely thrive in containers each one brings its own personality whether it’s bold blooms striking foliage or year round 1. Same question. Where do you keep them in winter? I left a lavender plant out all winter as it did not grow very well. Now it’s growing! Wierd

  2. I have some Hostas planted in a plastic pot for a few yrs now and they are doing very well. This year I plan to try a few others which should save me some money by buying less annuals. Thanks for sharing and giving me more ideas
