Container Gardening – What I have growing in containers

I really don’t show my containers much so thought I’d show you what I have. My preference is growing in ground as its less maintenance but have a few things growing in them.

Hello and welcome to Gapy’s Garden. Last week I posted a garden update and it was a fairly long one and I rarely get around to showing my containers in those updates. So I thought today I would give you a little tour of what I’ve got growing in containers. I don’t have a lot, but I do have a few things. So I will start with the what I have right behind me here. This is a Waitex Green Living uh vertical garden basically, but these come in a bunch of different sizes. So, I’ve got a little mini micro tomato here in this one. This one’s called the Orange Dream. And then in this larger basket, I’ve got some loilia flowers, a nersium, and I think that’s about it. But I’ll give you a closer look at the ntoriums because they’re really pretty. So these ntoriums are from a kaleidoscope ntorium mix. So they come in different colors, but I really like how this one came out. It’s a an orange with a really dark orange center. And these are edible in case you didn’t know. So they’ve got like a spicy flavor to them. I really like them. And the seeds here, we’ve got a few seeds. These are really, really spicy. This is probably the spiciest part of the plant. They’re pretty tasty. For the last few years, I’ve been growing tomatoes in hanging baskets. So, there’s a particular variety of tomato or type of tomato that is called a tumbling variety. This one here is the Shimo Fury. So, I grew this one last year and really liked it. So, I decided to grow it again. But, I like this one for a couple reasons. One is it’s got variegated leaves, which is just really cool. I love variegated plants. Um, some of the leaves aren’t really very variegated, but others, like this one, are very variegated. Um, but it should be starting to tumble here. It is growing a little bit more upright than it did last year. And another reason I really like this is because they are super super sweet. So, these were the sweetest tomatoes in my garden last year when I did a bricks test of all of my tomatoes. Um, so they’re very tasty and it’s pretty productive as well. But I’ve got it here in this wooden um, hanging basket and I have to water my container plants pretty much every day um, which can get kind of timeconuming. So I don’t grow a whole lot in containers cuz I don’t really have a whole lot of time to water every day. Now if you’re not new to my channel, you are probably aware that I have quite the fig collection. So, almost all of my figs are in containers and I do water them pretty much every day, especially right now when we’re not getting much rain and it’s been very hot. Uh, but I’ve probably got a little over 40 fig trees right now and almost all of them are different varieties and a lot of them are in need of root pruning or repotting and I just have not had time. So, um, yeah, I’ve got a lot of them and they are almost all pretty much starting to set fruit and I usually do a almost monthly fig update on my channel. So, if you’re interested in figs, be sure to check those out. I’ll be doing another fig update here, probably in the next couple of weeks. I have a few carnivorous plants in pots. This one I’ve had for a few years now. And let’s see if I could say the name of it. Sarah Senia luccoil. So, this one’s a pitcher plant. And I’m not sure but why, but for some reason, some of these pictures are getting all dried out on top. Um, this one here is looking really good, but some of these are I don’t know, getting kind of crispy. I don’t know if it’s not wet enough or or what, but I haven’t had that issue in the past. Um, and then I’ve got two new ones that we picked up at the flower and garden show this spring. Um, these ones are Venus fly traps. This one is a green one. It doesn’t say what variety it is. Um, but this one is a a purple, a dark purple one called Red Dragon. Um, it’s kind of hard to tell if it’s dead or alive. Um, but it doesn’t look so great. So, I don’t know if that one’s going to make it. This one looks okay, but it’s not really growing too much. So, we’ll see if those make it. But, I think the pitcher plant is probably doing a little better than those. I’m not sure if I should cut maybe these dried up ones off or not. Now, back here next to my figs, I’ve got a rosemary that is in a a container here. And it is kind of getting dried out. I do water it every day at the same time as the fig trees, but for some reason, it’s still kind of getting a little bit dried out. So, I don’t know what the deal is with that one. I probably need to repot it. That might help. Now, these are a few things I have in pots from propagations or things that I’ve obtained recently. This bigger one here, this is a mulberry that I’m thinking about planting in the backyard. I’m not sure what the variety is, but I picked that up at one of our big tastings last year, and it’s been in this pot pretty much ever since. And I’ve got a lavender here that I propagated from our lavender bush. And then here we have a honey berry. This is a blue moon variety. So, this was taken off of one of our existing bushes. There was a a branch of it that was uh laying on the ground and it had rooted. So, I decided to dig it up and try potting it up and it seems to be doing pretty well. I potted this up. I think it was last fall that I dug it up and I probably need to put that into a bigger container, too. Now, we’re here in the front yard where I have a a few more containers. This one here is one that’s got some succulents in it. So, I don’t water the front yard very often, so I need kind of drought tolerant things. So, we’ve got a bunch of really kind of cute succulents in here. There’s another um one here. And then I’ve got some moss roses in here that I started from seed. I think I only got one or two of these to germinate this year. Um so, they’re kind of done flowering. So, I don’t know if maybe if I pinch those off if they might keep flowering or not. Um, but that’s in that container. And then this is a plant that I picked up last year that I just haven’t gotten around to uh planting, but it I just was really attracted to these variegated leaves. Uh, but this is a Tasmanian tiger euphoria. So, I’ve got a euphoria in the ground back here behind the pionies, but it’s not a a nice variegated one like this. I just haven’t figured out where I want to plant this yet. So, it’s just been sitting in this container. I have another cool container in the front yard with some succulents in it. Unfortunately, the there was a grass kind of in the an ornamental grass in the middle that seems to have died. So, there’s like this root ball here. So, I need to find something else to plant in the middle here. If you have any ideas of some nice uh drought tolerant plant I can plant in there, let me know. Um, but I’ve got a bunch of different succulents. Oh, by the way, this was a garage sale find and I can’t remember how much we got it for, but it was a really good price. Um, but it already came with some of these succulents, but I also planted a few of them as well. Um, we’ve got this one here, and I I don’t know what the names of any of these succulents are, but I do like them. I think we’ve got some in every single one of these containers here. That’s This one is almost dead, it looks like. But the other ones seem to be doing pretty well, especially this one here. On the side of our garage, we have this really cool pot here, but as you can see, there’s nothing in it. So, I had a cone flower in here for several years, and for some reason, it decided it didn’t want to come back this year. So, I need to either find another cone flower or put something else in the spot that’s maybe more drought tolerant cuz we don’t get a lot of rain or watering here in the spot since I mentioned I don’t do much watering in the front yard. So, I’ve got tons of succulents here as ground cover on this side of the the garage. So, they seem to be enjoying it here. So, maybe I’ll I’ll see if I can find some other succulent maybe to put in this pot. Uh, but if you have any ideas, um, let me know. This is a really neat spot for something cool. So, I’d like to put something of interest in here. We’re going to take a look at the other side of the garage. We’ve got one more container back here. And I won this one in a giveaway. It’s a ceramic pot. If you can even see it, we’ve got these vines growing up along it. But it’s a really nice pot. I should probably cut some of these back so you can actually see the pot. The only thing we have growing in this pot is this sea holly, which I can’t remember if I started this from seed or if I got this at a nursery. I’m thinking I got it at a No, actually, I think I did start this from seed. Um I’ll have to I’ll have to double check, but um it’s been growing in here for probably four or five years now, and it it’s been coming back every year. So, that is pretty cool. But I I would like to find some other plants to plant in here with it. Um I think there used to be a few things in here, but I think that’s pretty much all that’s growing in there. And it’s very dry. So, if you’re looking for drought tolerant plants, this this thing seems to be pretty drought tolerant. Here’s a look at our beehives. We’ve got three in the front yard and two actually one in the backyard. Now, we did lose one earlier in the spring. Um, but I have a lot of stuff here in the front yard that I don’t really show very often. I think the last time I’ve done a front yard tour is probably I don’t know, four or five years ago.
