After some unplanned delays (thanks, spring weather), I finally finished assembling the Scandiglas greenhouse from YourGreenhouses with an aluminum frame and glass panels. Right now it’s set up as a peaceful lounging spot, but part of me is tempted to fill it with tomatoes, cucumbers, or even citrus.

Have any of you made the switch between greenhouse lounging and growing? Is it worth giving up the cozy vibes for the harvest? Or is there a middle ground I’m missing?

The middle ground to me are herbs.

Delicious, and some like lavender and rosemary actually keep pests away.

Absolutely grow in it — it’s a greenhouse.

I genuinely can’t imagine using a glass box in direct sun as a relaxing hangout space, especially in a warm climate. Without serious airflow (like fans and an evaporative cooling wall) and shade management, it’ll feel more like a hot sauna, or the inside of a car baking in a parking lot, than a retreat.

Why not lean into its strengths? Set it up as a true greenhouse for year-round growing, and then build a pergola or add a secondary patio right next to it. That way, you can actually sit outside, enjoy the breeze, and admire your plants without melting.

Maybe it’s just my climate talking, but using a sealed glass box as a lounge sounds more like an Instagram photo than it does real life.

Edit: Looking back at your image, I’d move the greenhouse to one side of the deck pad, then put seating, small table, and umbrella for shade on the other side’s remaining space to be able to enjoy the greenhouse from the outside. Bonus, the umbrella can help shade the greenhouse during the height of afternoon sun if you pick the right directional spot. Or you could add pavers below for more lounging space.

It’s fulfilling to grow your own food but you can always start small with some vegetables and keep a lounging area. Then you can add if you want or end up going back to a full lounging area.

Why do you have two greenhouses and not know about growing in a greenhouse?

Do both!!! Have hanging and climbing plants in there! Put in some humidity, and air plants would be really cool.

Depends on why you built a green house??

Both, expand the walls to the edge of your platform. Still plenty of room for plants and you can nap amongst them! Good job on what you’ve done so far it looks awesome!
