From Ontario Can.
I've heard of both mow it often, and mow after 4 weeks but decided to wait as it's New soft top soil and i believe a grass blend of Kentucky, blue, rye. Some areas are well over 12 inches in height and some are completely bare.
Seeded from nothing and fert on June 30th, progress from July 20th.
Watered everyday
Looking for advice on if I should mow now or later.
My plan was to mow next weekend then seed and fert again.

Yes you should.mow it now but only cut 1/3 of the length in each time you cut it
The typical advice is to mow it as soon as it’s tall enough. It’s generally stressful for grass to cut too much at once so you don’t want to go from 5″ to 2″ in one cut, for example. Your problem will be that there isn’t a mower that cuts at 9″ đ. I would say cut it now but cut at maximum height the mower will allow. Hope for the best?
If you want to go shorter wait at least a few days for it to start to recover and then go down one level. Mow again. keep it tall for the rest of the season. Taller will be better for root development.
Me: âhow is someone planting grass right now?â
Also me: âoh itâs in Canadaâ
I would definitely mow! Just set your lawn mower height as high as it will go and do it as gently as you can. Make sure your blades are sharp!
The problem with letting it get so high is that youâll now be cutting more than half of its height which is not so good, but it will be ok. Iâm a little worried how this grass will do in the heat of august but keep us posted!
You waited way too long. Now you will have to mow it down way too far too fast to get ahead of it. You have no real choice though at this point.
But yes you should mow it. Might want to get a hay bailer and make some extra cash on the side out of it.
Lots of people saying you need to mow but you’ll take too much length off. If you’re good with a string trimmer you can try to use that instead of a mower but that’s a lot of string trimming
You need to weed wack at this point, THEN mow.
OR, try to mow at your mower’s highest setting and watch it possibly get shut down repeatedly from the grass being too tall.
You waited WAY too long to mow. When you’re able to, keep it at 3 – 4 inches tall for the summer, then 2 – 3 inches tall for fall and spring.
Yes, mow. Mow it every day. You should have been mowing weeks ago.
Mow it on your highest settings first. Then 3-5 days after, mow it again gradually lowering deck.
Shouldâve got a manual reel mower and started cutting immediatelyÂ
Set your mower as high as it’ll go and you’ll want to bag it.
You should of mowed sooner, it may stress the grass out but don’t let it get longer.
From here on out mow it as often as it takes to not take more than about 1/3 of the length of. That may be twice a week in the summer. I usually mow at 3 or 3 1/2″ depending on the sun exposure. Longer grass means deeper roots and less watering.
Yea and use the bag on the mower for the clippings
Also, it looks like a poison ivy vine is starting to grow near the corner. Itâs fuzzy, but it looks like poison ivy
If course. It’s too tall already
Yes, should have already been mowed. Be gentle turning and cut as high as possible.
Mow with very sharp blades, when grass is dry in the evening at your mowers highest setting.
Grass will probably shock if it gets sunny and hot the next morning. Might want to give it some water before sun up.
Highest possible setting, use fresh sharp blades, mow very slowly and youâll be bagging frequently. In your case, check your bag often and do not let it get heavy. Keep the bag light. Take your time.
the good news is yes, the bad news is that you waited so long that youll have to use scissors to get the correct height
Yes, but cut really high, and mow/drop every 3 days until your blade length is 4″. Cutting a ton off at once will mat in the mower, mat new grass down, and hurt the plant by taking too much off at once.
A personal rule-of-thumb here is not to cut more than 1/3 of total grass height at a time. Might suggest making a high pass now, wait a week then another lower pass, etc..
As been said, if you donât want to kill it and waste all that money and time spent, youâll need to go out there with a string trimmer and knock it down by a third. Blow off any clumps, then wait a few days till you notice more growth, measure it, and if your mower can cut that high, mow it, if not, string trimmer again.
If you use a mower now, youâll be removing the leaves and cutting into the stems. Not good.
let the soil get a little dry just so you don’t leave mower tracks. cut at the highest setting with bagging. In 3 days, cut again at one lower setting (and advise bagging that one too).
Then you should probably should leave it 3″ + until summer ends
You waited too long. Mow as high as you can and bag it. The amount and size of clippings will smother the new lawn unless your mower is amazing at mulching. Normally youâd want the clippings to help retain moisture, but i think these blades are just way too big.
Iâm sure youâll be fine going forward no matter what you do. Mow regularly now, continue to water.
If you do cut, I recommend going very slow. Take your time, the soil looks thin and possibly overwatered or maybe itâs just a low spot in general. You donât want to rip or tear the grass & from the looks of it a simple slip and fall could gouge the yard, believe me Iâve done it.
>I’ve heard of both mow it often, and mow after 4 weeks but decided to wait
So you knew the right thing to do, but ignored it. If we repeat that correct advice to you, are you going to listen this time?
Just keep the âangsty-high-school-teen-mowing-the-lawn-because-dad-told-you-toâ attitude and cut at the highest setting with the chute open so youâre not mulching and maybe rake the clippings? Honestly the grass is grown so whats the worst thats gonna happen? Maybe you gotta overseed again next year but so what
Yes mow, on the highest setting, go nice and slow. make sure the blades are sharp and you bag the clippings.
1- invent Time Machine
2- go back and cut it at 6â
Yes, mow it. Today.
Iâve always read itâs ready to mow when it needs to be mowed. It always feels wrong driving on it for the first time though haha
Yes. You should have mowed well before 12 inches. If you are worried about the soil, then try to only mow straight. No turns on the grass. Straight thru to the sidewalk or street. Turn around on sidewalk/street. Then mow another straight line. Do this as much as your layout allows.
Hi, Lawn master, Iâm very new. Can I ask, Q1, why a lot of comments here say âset your mower highestâ? Why not just directly go to whatever the target inches? Q2, why ppl say âyou may need to bag it ?â Just for looking good? Thank you
You better gag this or youâll choke your lawn will all the juicy clumps
