I don't have the greenest of thumbs. My grandparents gave this to me as a birthday gift. Can anyone help with specifically identifying all the plants and how I can care for them? I've done a little bit of looking and I'm not sure if these can be kept together the way they currently are. Thank you 🙂

Succulent…ugh I’d kill those in a day lol

Middle-left plant is Silver Squill, it has bulbous stems that shrink and expand when dry/watered. It’s surrounded by layers of papery dead stuff, like an onion. Keep an eye on that and always water diligently- they’ll rot if overwatered. I recommend separating the plants here- most need different soil mixtures/care than the others, like SoP- I wish I could help with that, but it’s a miracle I’ve kept mine alive at all. I think my advice goes against the general consensus on that one, so I’ll leave it to others.

That’s sick!! Congrats. I’d kill it in a month

  4. I think the best time to water them is at night

Try to neglect it. Succulents thrive on neglect.

Water sparingly ! Indirect light and they’ll be happy

The one that looks like peas is string of pearls! I think they do best with lots of direct sun, but mine has stayed alive and growing in a bright north-facing window. They don’t need to be watered often. I usually bottom water succulents every few weeks (ie. Put the pot inside a larger bowl of water a few inches deep and just leave it for a while so the water can soak in through the drainage holes at the bottom. Lots of water at once like a big rainstorm, then absolutely none until it’s dry). When I have killed succulents, it has usually been from over watering, so just be careful! As for the cactus, I’ve never seen a slower and more gruesome looking plant death than that of the cactus I had that looked just like that (it came from a three-pack of cacti from Ikea, so I don’t know the name). It looked so messed up at the end. Best of luck, and know that a lot of succulents can be re-started from trimmings if you do mess up!

What a sweet gift! All of the plants on the left are succulents and that’s a small barrel cactus on the right. I water my succulents WAY more often than my cacti, so I would be mindful of that. I probably water my cacti about twice a month (I bring them outside in the summer so depending on rainfall) and I water my succulents about every five days or so. This planter might really love it outside on a patio or something during the summer- I’ve got a similar planter filled with succulents and they are THRIVING outside. Best of luck with your lovely gift 💕

I would separate them. These arrangements are very pretty, but all of these plants have different needs.

You will get much better advice in r/succulents

Water sparingly, less than you think you should. Put them on the brightest spot in your house, or preferably outside if your weather allows it, all my succulents live outside in full sun.

I’m a chronic overwater-er so I would try to put that somewhere I’d forget to water it.

That looks like stonecrop on the left hanging off the side. There’s a pump bottle they make for this for succulents from Home Depot. I’ll try and follow up.

If you don’t love plants that much, put it in front of a window and water it when it’s completely dry and see what it does and have fun. We eat plants every day, so it’s okay do get enjoyment short term from house plants.

Come to r/succulents ! Folks there will be better able to identify them so you can find out their individual needs, and we have a great wiki with starter info that will help you repot them and with general care. I agree that seperating them would likely be best. General succulent advice is bright light, and water based on visual signs of thirst more than on a schedule – succulents like to have dry periods between watering. They need quick drying soil, which commercial succulent mix isn’t sufficient for – it is best mixed 50/50 with inorganic grit like perlite.

Back middle silvery one is a cotyledon orbiculata

It’s native to Australia and incredibly light loving. Recommend water it sparingly.

Make sure there are drainage holes in the bottom, find the sunniest spot in your house and put it there or put it under a grow light and put a reminder in your phone’s calendar to water it every 4-5 weeks. In my experience succulents like being in a very sunny window and thrive in bright direct sunlight and if they do burn all you have to do is move them a foot away from the window to prevent burning which in my experience is very rare for succulents.

It’s nice that you want to keep your grandparents alive. Just love them for as long as you have them.

I think you have a coppertone stonecrop in there. I’d definitely separate them.

Killing plants is part of the experience. Even the greenest thumbs still kill some; you don’t hear about them. You learn from the mistakes more than from your victories. Plants die. It happens. C’est la vie. Don’t let that stop you (unless it becomes a real mental and financial problem). Welcome to the journey!

They need separated for sure – at least three different pots. The cactus and string of pearls need different care than the others.

Give it as much light as you can. If you live in a place where the days get really short in the wintertime, it’s a good idea to get a grow light.

You’ll want to water it about once a month, but you can be the judge based on how the soil feels and how the plants look.
