I had a similar thing around a desert globemallow and it lasted a long time. Could never figure out what it was because I couldn’t get close enough to get good pics.
Take pics of underneath or if you cut it off, take more pics and post it and see what they say.

No, please don’t eat it. If you want to forage and eat local mushrooms, go for boletes; easy to id. I saw one at Red Bud Isle on Friday.
