My sister had this cactus for ages and it’s grown massively in the past years. She wasn’t home much and didn’t water a lot this summer until the past weeks. Now a week ago she’s realised it turned black only on the very top, Within that week the black part spread out to the base of it. The black part feels mushy, the green base still feels regular.
How could this have happened? I’d suggest cutting the black part off and hoping for a new growth. Is that reasonable or should she just chuck this in the trash? It’s an indoor plant, only indirect sunlight throughout the day. Same spot for more than a year, soil has been the same for years as well, I doubt she ever put fertiliser in there

  1. it might still have hope ! cut off the rot, let it dry 🙏

  2. Cut until there is no brown/mushy part left. Take it out of the pot and check for root rot.
