We got a lot done today—and we’re feeling pretty good about it. In this video, we:

💧 Installed a new Hoselink retractable hose reel (and finally ran a water line to the back of the garden!).
🦌 Set up one of our favorite deer deterrents—the Yard Enforcer—to protect some vulnerable plants. https://urlgeni.us/amzn/IcK8
🌸 Shared our go-to fertilizer tool for feeding annuals without hauling a watering can for miles

It wasn’t without a few detours and sprinkler mishaps (one of us definitely got sprayed…), but we’re all set up for summer with tools that actually make garden life easier.

We film everything here in our Zone 6A garden in upstate New York—and we’re always tweaking, improving, and having fun with it. Thanks for growing with us!

00:30 Installing a New Hose Reel
11:30 Installing a Yard Enforcer
15:00 Fertilizer upgrade

today is all about function in the garden we’re going to be showing you how we install a brand new hose link retractable hose reel we’re also going to be installing a yard forester our foolproof way of keeping deer out of the garden and we’re going to show you a really nifty tool for fertilizing annuals in the ground welcome to our garden here in zone 6A upstate New York and we’re super thrilled because we have been waiting for practically years to install an extra hose line in the back of our garden and finally the company came this past week and trenched you can barely even tell trenched a line all the way back here to this water box an irrigation control valve and this is where we’re going to be hooking up our brand new hose link retractable hose reel now a couple of days ago I went ahead and I installed this plumbers’s pipe it is 1 in by 60 in and right now we’re going to take a look back on how we did that this area here is where they installed this new uh box that’s going to have a hose bib in it a hose hookup so I’m going to put a splitter on there and then we’re going to trench underneath to get this hose link set up and I think I’m going to cut back some of this quint and tuck in the post right under here in between the quint and the juniper and it’s very skinny pipe so it’ll stick up here the hose rail should probably reach about this height and I I think it’s going to blend in very well and that quint is getting a little pushy anyway so here’s what I have for this project i have our power planter with the augur to drill the hole i have a shovel to get extra soil out oh I’m winded from bringing this back here i have the actual pipe this 1 in black pipe that we’re putting in the ground the rocks the quickrete some pruners to take after that one big branch of the quint right there so this right here is the pipe that’s going in the ground it’s just I got in the plumbing section of Home Depot it’s a 1 in x 60 in so it’s 5 ft tall about a third of it at least a third of it has to go into the ground and then I will fill I’ll dr augur the hole you know dig it out i’ll see what I mean cuz there’s a birch tree and there’s quins and there’s a juniper so who knows how well the augur will work and then I’ll dig it out with the shovel if I need to put gravel at the base of the hole put at least a third of the pipe down into the hole level it oh I forgot the level that reminds me uh pour the concrete around it level it it takes about 20 minutes to set and then I can cover back up with dirt because it’s quick creek quickrete and then it says you can put weight on it after 4 hours but we’re going to hold off let it set for at least 24 before putting the hose reel on it so [Applause] Okay now I’m going to level it now I’ll add water and level it again that’s as level as it’s going to get so I’m going to let it set 20 minutes it should be ready to cover with dirt and then again I’m just going to leave it for until this weekend when we can film the rest of this lovely video wow I’m exhausted just watching you have done that thank you for doing that while I was at work it was like a really super hot afternoon but I was able to get it done and I’m excited to open up our news hose link now last year we spent the season using Bego hose reels they’re 100 foot high flow hose reel and they worked really really well for us but one problem we encountered with them is the quality of the actual nozzle they broke when we dropped them on the ground and we’re kind of clumsy that way so we were really excited to try these new hose link 100t reels because we need 100 ft in our garden cuz it’s pretty wide it’s a halfacre lot and what we have happily discovered over the last two months of using the hose link reels that have already been installed on the sides of the houses is that the hose nozzle itself has really nice rubber buffer around the edge so that when we inevitably drop it it doesn’t break not to mention the hose itself is much less likely to kink as you are retracting it which was something that I had a little bit of trouble with last year we of course got it in charcoal because you know us all of our garden accents are charcoal colored or black i will also say it’s more lightweight than the bego nice assisting assistant there we go so got this set up and then what’s cool are these quick connects are lovely for the hose links i like to add extra plumbers’s tape because do it now before you encounter the leak later i also brought out a wrench for you to put where your left hand is for tightening purposes yep thank you so I can go ahead and give that a pinch one of the delicate parts of a hose that I have encountered over the years is always that juncture in between where the the metal connects so it’s always good to hold that with a wrench and then spin your implement or in this case quick connect to tighten it now you if you’ve been following us for a while you know we’ve gone through our fair share of 100 foot hose reels um the first ones we used were from Costco really good value i think they were great great value very heavy but they work extremely well um and Vego was good too but we did break the nozzles when we dropped them on our um gravel on the patio on that concrete uh they do have a higher flow rate on their 100 foot hose than the hose link I think but I like the color of the hose link and I do like that the nozzle is a little more high um quality heavy duty yeah so we’ve got that and then I’m going to add on the nozzle right yep but I’m going to add in some plumbers tape first i also do have to say the quick connects on a hose link product take a minute you it there’s a little bit of a learning curve they’re not as easy as just a a plug and snap you really have to figure out how to line them up properly but once you do you get the hang of it and they’re perfectly fine taking the time to do a little plumber tape is worth it do I think it’s necessary no but I think at some point you’ll be doing it anyway so So that’s it as far as that goes right now we’ve got to get in the ground and hook up the splitter yep and then get that attached to through the ground into the splitter yeah let’s get this installed it’s pretty easy this part then there’s going to be some logistics that we have to worry about eric thank you for moving the quint aside we reveal the pipe and here is the pipe on the back of the hose link that inserts like so step one of our installation done yeah now you can see it’s sticking into the pipe okay there you can see it’s sticking out of the pipe it looks like a dinosaur sticking out of the quint as you back up oh look we can kind of tuck it away and you won’t even see it it’s masked yeah I think it’ll be totally fine i mean it’s a hose it is it’s overunctional that’s today’s theme is functional gardening functional gardening now there’s some logistics we have to take after we had a hose well a hose bib put in this junction box it actually had to be run all the way from the other side of the property up by the Gatsby pink oakleaf hydrangeanger and nothing but rain these last few days so I’m Yep exactly what I anticipated so this is a plastic box but the bottom is actually landscape fabric so it’s hard plastic and then there’s fabric here so what’s going to happen is we’re going to put a little X in this fabric and then we have to dig up and up to about here or so with this extension hose short piece that we picked up at the big box store so we’re going to attach it here it’s going to kind of go up loop underneath and come out here then we’ll put the splitter on it there was a bit of a detour this setup is not what we thought we were going to be dealing with but that’s okay we got um all Macgyver about this and we ran over to the hardware store and bought one of these hole dozers that went on the drill and we just poked a hole directly through that was way easier than doing anything else right cuz then we were going to need like angles and splitters and benders and that’s a whole bunch of stuff so now the hose goes like this straight down so all we have to do is attach this to that hose bib then this will pop out and yeah we’ll see some hose but guess what it’ll be a little dirty and we’ll cover it with mulch then we’ll attach the other end to the splitter and we’re back on track yes and then we’ll pick up theirs all right i am going into the goo so now feed that through the lid yep so this is going through the lid here this was This is such a better idea for us we don’t need to be getting into plumbing pieces yeah to turn so now I have to put the splitter on here is the splitter so now we’re going to do the quick connect of this onto one of these this hose back here is going to make our gardening life so much easier that is can’t even That is 100% now while you’re there I am going to hand you this other length of hose that we’ll explain in a minute but I want you to get it attached while you’re in in the groove that’s connected so that means that our hose is charged this is off let’s see if the hose works i hear a filling i hear a filling i don’t see any leaks yet okay are you ready Christopher i’m so ready for this this is so great so easy come this way i’m just going to watch are you kidding me i am so excited to have this yeah that’s a happy moment that’s a very happy moment that is amazing that’s amazing and then reels in as expected nice and easy and then it just sits there and does a thing hangs out all right that was very successful that was very successful so now we will fill in that hole we attempted to dig we’re going to bring this around back somehow fish it through some stuff yep and then set up the yard enforcer on the other side all right so I have clamorred through here oh look it’s the last of our plumbers tape oh just enough just enough that in my this is the back side of the burm this is you can see it’s a little less tended to little less tended but oh my that kalpa that we paid $10 for on clearance look at how big that got in a year gorgeous so we have all of this length and we have a yard enforcer so hand that friend over to me here great we’ve done a video on how to install a yard enforcer and I got to tell you the reason that we have a hydrangeanger room is the art enforcer to the yard enforcer our Sublime hydrangeanger hedge also has one in it and never had a nibble on it so right now I’m just going to attach this here this little hose friend those these liter hoses are never leader hose so the yard enforcer has to hook up to a live wire hose like it just has to have water pressure on it at all times it is heat and motion activated at from dusk to dawn and we are going to put it facing the back of the burm so if a deer comes along yes it’s going to get sprayed and you have options for what angle it works at so the motion detector so I’m going to put it since it’s going to be kind of tucked here yep we want it up upwards so when a lovely deer comes from over there from the neighbor’s house or this way it gets caught immediately by this ratchet sprinkler which I have set to go in this kind of 80° circle so it doesn’t just spray right back into the tree so I’m going to set it on Should I put it on always for a second to make sure it works yeah i’m just going to stand back then if you’re going to put it on always yeah stand back just a little bit that’s great and honestly we really don’t come back here and do much so this is going right Well I I am about to mow up here shortly all right well I’ll turn it off at that point but I’m going to put it right Oh I can hear it working because it does have four batteries in it that are in already but now what I got to do is turn that water on i’m going to get sprayed i know you are going to get sprayed going to go this direction water is coming now so now you just got to maybe wave your hands or something oh there it is and where deer oh you Oh my gosh is it getting you yeah it’s spraying towards you it’s coming ah yep it’s going the wrong direction oh no so there’s pins that you put in to make it work the pins have to be reversed yep if you could see my glasses right now oh oh god okay stop stop i’m trying i’m moving run he’s up there working resetting the pins i’m down here drying off a little bit now I have it going in the correct direction oh jeez okay all right perfect well that’s certainly going to stop a deer in its track since it’s Well let’s change it to nighttime only so I can still mow back here and stuff and now it’s on nighttime only nice good phew all right so now we’re going to tidy up and then show you how we’re going to use this hose link to fertilize our inground annuals i don’t think that looks bad at all actually I think that’s going to totally work and the convenience of that and the functionality of that outweighs any little green hose sticking out of the ground that’s for sure so let us reintroduce you to something we talked about last year but that was on a different hose link and this is going to be so convenient this is called the Chapen wet dry sprayer it’s become my new best friend it’s incredibly easy to use very much foolproof it has three pieces it has the basket with the little tube it has the reservoir and it has the sprayer here’s what we do we’re gonna fill up this little basket with our fertilizer again we’re using the Proven Winners um lovely fertilizer it has that iron in it that keeps everything looking so green i’ve heard the color has changed on this so yeah it’s a little different but when you put I usually take my finger and pull the little nozzle to the side just so it doesn’t get all over the place and yes because it’ll clog that nozzle if you get it in there right so I’m just literally filling this up um all the way i found when I’ve used this in the past that I can actually get almost the entire garden in two fills because when you think about how many scoops and how many scoops per gallon this is it’s uh it goes pretty far so that’s how much I’m going to fill for now i did try to fill it up once all the way to the top and it got a little messy so then you just drop that in and line up the tube here with that slide it down in there give it a spin here is the genius part we look at our directions and our directions tell us for outdoor use in a clean pale one tablespoon to one gallon of water which is one scoop which is one scoop so what we do is we turn this dial there’s two teaspoons one tablespoon for one gallon of water you know so you can go all the way up depending on what you’re using change the ratio of the mix right so let’s go back here again to one tablespoon per gallon we’re going to have it set on dry when I turn the hose on and then you’ve got a couple options for spray and a straight line kind of thing one thing I will say because we’re using the 100 foot long hose reel it doesn’t have the same power obviously as using a 5/8 inch hose this is a slightly smaller hose so it doesn’t give you that like a lush spray coming out of this but the convenience factor far outweighs anything so I’ve got it on off turn this so now the hose reel itself is on the water is acharged what do we want to water well I think we want to water oh I don’t know what do we need to water back here well we have this hedge of adatum right here we do have the hedge of adatum so as we’re going across here Eric let me show you what’s going to happen you turn it on and water starts coming out immediately but the basket isn’t full yet so wait there’s a little Can you see that splish yep okay so once it’s completely full is when it’s really doing the work okay but in the meantime you can you can immediately start using it but I usually kind of let it fill before I get too carried away all right well in the meantime why don’t I water some uh hydrangeas let’s Well yeah well what about these fox gloves right here what they might want a little something look at this that selfseated itself Eric so pretty gorgeous this is Sutton’s apricot such a beautiful plant give those guys a little water and now we’re almost full and I find that when I use it if I continuously jiggle it a bit make sure that the the water soluble is soluble in yeah solub solubic solubing and let me show you what the other sprays look like so this I like this for a hedge it kind of is like a like a flat hand of water uh-huh so then when I get up here under the agerat because we don’t want to necessarily do too much I can do my count to 10 but I’m also getting a little bit under the ones next to it and I don’t feel wasteful nice how long a reminiscent pink rose is blooming oh I’m going to smell that when I get over there so just imagine how many times you would need to come back to the watering can to refill this and you don’t have to get down i’m just being so delicate for the video Eric i know and then you have to be you know cognizant of things that don’t like fertilizer we won’t be fertilizing the cat mint we wouldn’t fertilize sedum or things like that but we would fertilize this incredible super tunia vista cool jazz cool jazz also this cotton candy fillet is still flowering weeks and weeks the plant itself is so full really nice and the lark ascending is flowering actually you can water the earn in while you’re here oh that was next how gorgeous is this filling in i’m going to get it from this angle because it’s really nice now I don’t know if you noticed Eric I I am so impressed with these loilia that pink fluff that’s coming out i do too we’ve never grown it before and it’s pretty cool oh you can see our drip has been running there’s dark spots really nice and other good news look at the bottom of our Troar blue spruce it’s got growth it looks like a tree is and our oh so easy peasy roses are all buted up so Christopher is going to finish up fertilizing all the annuals and that pretty much puts a wrap on our three really high functional projects for the garden today really high functioning good stuff that was really fun we got so many functional things accomplished today from installing the hose link to adding in our deer protector which really does work we have been using it for years at this point yes we have and getting this guy installed oh my gosh I can’t wait to get the rest of this garden fertilized for more information on our garden please visit growformeguardening.com again I’m Eric and I’m Christopher and we’re Grow Forme Gardening thanks for growing with us

  1. Sorry to laugh at your expense but so funny don’t you love it when your glasses get all sprayed 😂. Maybe those pesky deer will think twice before coming into the garden ❤

  2. Oh my goodness! Laughter IS the best medicine and you guys gave me an overdose with the Enforcer! Your gardens are looking lovely.

  3. Really funny! We are getting ready to order our 2nd hoselink truly great product. And I may have to go out and buy that Chaplin watering system. Thanks again for another great tip.

  4. Hey Neighbors thank you for this. I have an Arce and I need to add a water hose line in the back. I have been using two 100ft hoses. One to bring to the middle of the garden so I can water the other parts. I want to do what you guys did. Does the extend water line need to blown out too? I bought 3 retractable hose last year, since I needed 3 for the price of one hose link last black Friday. Thanks for also showing the black pole. I like that more than the wood post.

  5. I have been enjoying all your videos and this one I won't soon forget 😂
We just dug out an old Quince that's been in the yard for 25 years, what a job! The roots are everywhere.

  6. I just wanted to say, that I saw in one of your videos, that you had a bit of a hard time, finding plants, that would thrive in the two pots, right by your front door, because it never got any direct sun. And I have a suggedtion. Hosta! They love the shade, and you can find all kinds of decorative variants and sizes. I might pick one, with a large white or yellow streak or edge, to brighten the spot as much as possible – but I am telling you, a lush, green, voluminous hosta can make such a difference in a shady spot, as you already know. And they thrive in pots! I have a terrace, that only gets evening sun, and I keep it filled with decorative hostas in a variety of colours and sizes, and it is my favourite spot in the garden 😊

  7. You guys have mastered the art of cohosting your videos. It’s so engaging, unique and fun. Brilliantly done! Thanks for providing such great information. 🍃🪴🌷🌲

  8. I actually sprinkle a tiny dab of the fertilizer granules. Then I use regular water from the hose on each plant. It’s way easier. Be careful not to overdo it with the granules though

  9. …you two! — when you got sprayed, I giggled out loud, I admit… 🥴 Thanks to you, I have a sprayer coming Saturday; I'll keep it out front, tucked away under a plant for handy access. I have another one for the backyard, but it's another brand. They ARE quick for annual feedings, especially with quick connects. 👌🙌
    👩🏼‍🌾💚🌳 =^..^=

  10. Love it! How do you know when to refill the canister with fertilizer? Does the blue just go clear?

  11. A lot of reviewers on Amazon say that the yard enforcer works for a few months, then starts to leak. Has this been your experience at all? My property is on the edge of forest and wetlands, and I'm constantly battling deer and rabbits (and squirrels, skunks, chipmunks…). Thanks!

  12. RUN!! Eric I can’t stop laughing. My husband looking into the same hose. Thanks for the info and showing us how to install.

  13. Isn't your garden glowing? I can't wait for the next tour! I got a new hose reel and although it's manual, it's working well! Do you havr Lee Valleys in your area? Seems like you had a blast!

  14. Oh my gosh, that deer spray was so funny. We all knew it was coming, but it was just a riot. Glad you got your new Hoselink. Hubby bought me the new 100' in the white and attached to wall today. May need to change out my 85' one for a new 100' in the Secret Garden. Could really use the extra 15'. Thanks again fellas. Your a hoot.

  15. Hahahaha…I hope it was at least a hot day! Fun to watch and had a good chuckle 😅 and I’ll say, you guys are talking me into a hoselink….
