[Music] hi everyone Lisa here from Down to Earth Gardening and Design welcome to our video today which is on these stunning lilacs so I am loving these they’ve only been here for about one year the variety is amazing it’s highly soughta so I want to tell you what they are a little bit about them how I planted them last year and some design ideas for them and last but not least um some care tips and believe it or not they’re pretty low maintenance so I’m here with three of these lilac shrubs and they are called royalty so they’re fabulous bloomers um fragrant color is stunning covered in blooms there’s a lot of pollinators around here but what I really love about them is that they are late spring early summer bloomers so we’re in um early June here and they’re covered in bloom some of them are still pretty tight so they’re really just coming into their own here so they are a late season lilac which I really love and my peies are flowering right now too so I’m going to show you uh I have a bucket of those with me at the end of the video I’m going to make some peie and lilac bouquets so what’s better than that so they’re stunning in the garden and they’re also stunning in bouques they This variety does get a little larger so about 8 to 10 feet tall when mature and about 6 to 8 feet wide they are deciduous so that means they’ll lose their leaves in the winter they do have some nice um glossy green foliage oblong shape and we’ll give you a closeup of those as well and they love their full sun and they do like their consistent moisture but they’re appropriate for zones 3 through 8 which makes them a little more heat tolerant than most lilacs so by the way I’m in zone 6b so how we planted them and they’re flowering so amazingly after one year it’s very impressive so I did want to make sure to let you know how and why we planted them here so I have this little corner in my full sun garden very important and when you plant them you want to make sure that they have well- drained soil so they can’t be sitting in moisture but they do need consistent watering so I know that’s a little confusing confusing so we built a little bit of a burm up here at the end because you really don’t want them um in an indentation because then they’ll be more likely to be sitting in standing water so none of that for these beauties but we planted the three together in hopes that they will make a nice little hedge here in the corner now not only are they in a great spot full sun and great soil but the other hot tip about planting these is you want to start off with a more mature shrub so you’ll see us planting these in uh we bought them in grow bags which for portability by the way is so much easier they were a 15gallon size so more mature means that you will be more likely to get a flowering display um earlier so you do need a more mature lilac to get your flower sooner so if you start off with a little size you may be waiting a couple years for your blooms so let’s just talk about some design tips or some design ideas so I have mine planted here on the corner and I’m kind of hoping they’ll give us a little privacy so they make a wonderful privacy screen or hedge now with that said they can also make a gorgeous specimen you can plant just one you don’t have to plant them in multiples they don’t require a pollinator so a single specimen in your garden can be fabulous now don’t forget you may want to plant them closer to your window your patio your deck because they are fragrant so it’s really lovely to be able to get all the benefits of these beautiful flowers all right last but not least let’s talk about care so they are pretty easy care if they’re planted in the right spot and um have the right soil conditions and all you really need to do is shear or prune them right after they’re done flowering so you want to get them pretty quick um for those of you that haven’t seen my lilac care video um I have one out and it goes through all the tips on caring for your lilacs but that is imperative that you don’t wait too long to prune them because it’s not too long after they’re done flowering that they start um putting out their growth and their buds for next year so you don’t want to cut those off so shearing or pruning and that will keep them flowering and it will also keep their shape and if you’d like to you can do a little bit of height control but I’m going to let them go for broke here i am going to lightly shear them so I’m sure to get some great flowers next year but I really don’t mind the height so I just want to show you my pianies and I gave away a few to a really nice neighbor that was walking by admiring flowers so my bucket is a little smaller than when I first started the video but you can see here that my peies are blooming and how much fun they are to have in bloom together and in some pretty cut bouques so I’m pretty excited about that so that’s it for today i hope that you enjoyed our video on our royalty lilacs and if you did please go ahead and give it a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel because I love sharing all things gardening with all of you [Music]
