After more than 13 years at Mostyn Kitchen Garden, Debbie and Phil Handley are calling time on their work there.
Based in the grounds of Mostyn Hall, near Holywell, the couple have tended to, and created a business from, the 18th century, restored walled garden.
Everything they grew was put to use, including jams, pickles, chutney, honey, cocktail syrups and vinegars. All grown, picked and preserved by the couple to organic principles, they were sold from their honesty box.

But with Phil, 67, retiring this month, the green-fingered couple has decided to step back.
Debbie, 54, said: “Mostyn Kitchen Garden has been a labour of love supported by family, friends, customers and most importantly, our amazing volunteers. We really couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you.
“All our different events and open days have been fun, a chance to connect with all of you who have supported us; pumpkins, strawberries, asparagus, flowers, tomatoes, wreath making, garden walks, the list goes on.
“We live here, we’ve built it from scratch, and it’s been a lot of work. Phil thinks the time has come, it’s hard work, physical hard work.
“We’re sad, we got married here, but we’re also really looking forward to the next stage.”
That next stage certainly isn’t to put their feet up.
Moving to Colwyn Bay, they will both continue the work they were involved in outside of the garden.
Debbie said: “I lead the Wales Food and Drink Horticulture Cluster and Phil is a mentor for Farming Connect, so we’ll continue to work with horticulture, farmers and growers.”
There was a lot of love from the community and supporters as the couple shared the news to the garden’s Facebook page, with many wishing them the best for the next step.
Anne Lovelock wrote: “This is so sad to read, we’ve really enjoyed our visits and your gorgeous produce. All the best for the future to you both.”

Hannah Elisabeth added: “Best wishes to you both on your new chapter. You have made MKG such a success and so inclusive, it’s has been wonderful seeing your achievements over the years. Your caramelised red onion chutney is the bomb. Good luck to you both.”
Maureen Roberts said: “Wishing you both good luck in the next chapter of your future. Will miss your gorgeous walled garden fruit and veg, take care both.”
Jacqueline Williams summed up the gardens and the couple well, saying: “Oh no. Gosh you will be missed. I’ve loved absolutely everything about MKG. But obviously wish you both a very happy retirement.
“Such a beautiful welcoming place that I adored coming to visit for your beautiful produce and just to marvel at the wonderful nature. Thank you for sharing it with us. Good luck with everything.”
