I’m pretty sure these grow all over Afghanistan. I snapped these pictures in Northern Washington.

  1. Yes.. they are what you think.. Poppy from the family Papaveraceae.

  2. Fun facts about drugs. While alcohol helped to found civilization, opium is thought to be the first drug discovered by civilization. Ancient Mesopotamian doctors would bake the stuff into breads or pastries and prescribe them to their patients.

When the British colonized India and Pakistan they were in deep trade debt to China, because of tea. To counter balance the deficit they forced farmers to grow poppies so that the Brits could sell opium to the Chinese. When the Chinese eventually got sick of the illegal drug smuggling they dumped all of it into the harbor. This launched the first Opium War and the century of humiliation in China. The effects of all of this are still being felt in today’s geopolitics.

They do grow everywhere in Afghanistan. When my husband was over there, they were forbidden to mess with them for fear of destroying the local economies.

  4. If you think they are poppies, then yes. Used to grow them with I lived in the Midwest. Lots of people grow them for their beauty.

What’s the big deal? They grow great here. Please don’t tell me you see every salvia plant and assume someones cooking something… Every marigold… every blah blah blah…

Edit: sorry i meant morning glory’s not marigolds. Would you believe me if I once saw a bag of morning glory seeds at a party?

  7. Isn’t it the same plant as bread poppies? I know my MIL used to plant them to make poppyseed roll.

  8. They grow all over my garden in Scotland too. They are a popular garden plant with many varieties.
