MIgardener: If You Aren’t Planting Carrots in JULY You Are MISSING OUT!
Don’t miss out on a perfect time to grow carrots! Yes, July carrots are possible and there are a few hacks and tips to grow them successfully. Here is how to do it.
Thanks Luke. Bought your carrot seeds, planted in April. Saved some seed for a Fall garden. They have grown well, thinking about harvesting now in July. I don't think a fall crop will work here. It took 4 months so far, yeah forget it. I'd like to know someone that can get 3 crops of carrots per year???
Just the video I needed! Due to a trip, got my spring carrots in late and none germinated and I was wondering if I could get any to grow right now in our hellishly hot Utah summer.
Hey Luke, I left my Spring planted carrots in the ground as an experiment. How do you think they’ll turn out? I planted heat tolerant varieties and they still turned out incredibly soapy and bitter by late May/early June when they were ready to pick. I thought hmm I’ll just leave them in to grow bigger and then maybe they’ll taste good by the time cool Fall weather rolls around. Is this possible? If it doesn’t work, I will just collect the seed.
Growing Danvers carrots here in MN in a container and got great germination in spring, but they're still not ready to harvest. I will plant another batch today using these tips. Thank you!❤
I do the same rather growing in the ground or pots. I always seem to have good luck that way. This last winter I planted seeds that I had bought from you and had great great germination. I just planted my summer crop last week.
I did the cardboard over carrot seeds earlier this month and got a ton of germination. I did poke a few small holes in the cardboard to help water soak in. It probably wasn't necessary, the seeds did stay scattered and didn't float around. It's been in 80s and 90s a lot this month. I'll try another little section of carrots in a few weeks. Excited to have better success this time with carrots, thanks to you @migardiner
I put nantes carrots spaced in container..4 days later they sprouted..row cover and wster daily lightly as 96 to 79 f..Ontario😮😂❤ Canada I put lil spinkle of dirt to make them deeper ❤❤ watchin…ran out deep watered..thinned a bit..wait til later about 60 came up 😂
I can't sow my seeds like this. I have to meticulously use a sharpie and make shallow holes so that my carrots grow singular and don't have to thin after germination.
Put my fall carrots in a week ago under wet burlap. Water well daily and they germinated great. I leave the burlap for about a week after germination so the tender sprouts don't get beat up by the hot sun. Love fall carrots.
I've seen people using pressboard or plywood to germinate carrots. I wouldn't do that because of the adhesive. Cardboard is supposed to use some kind of fish glue, as long as you don't use the glued seams its probably ok.
So my wife’s tree rats she feeds just got the rest of my peas ! Tried everything hot peppers etc and not sure rat wire would work! Lol , but planting carrots etc soon , also the “ odd weather conditions “ seems to not b helping, too much rain , to hot etc last year Tom plants were 10 feet high and lasted till late October, now not good , have semi raised bed s to large to cover with shade cloth etc but good vid !
I have to plant more carrots. I had 1 squirrel and 2 birds that have been enjoying my carrots this year. I have 7 carrots left, and that's only because I threw a bunch of radishes in around them, and birds and squirrels don't like radishes. But, I have 7 beautiful carrots growing right now. Something is better than nothing. 😅😂🤣😂🤣😂
Why do my carrots say 75 days on them, when I planted them in late march, it's now like 110 days, and they are the size of toothpicks to maybe my pinkie yet in milwaukee area?
Oh you sweet summer child, the optimism of thinking that I have any space in any bed that hasn't been overrun by tomatoes com mid July. I swear I planted other things in the garden, it's a tomatoes' garden now, they have jumped the collapsed trellises and started climbing bed to bed a this point, (MIs Tommy Toe cherry tomatoes are no joke!) the peppers on either end of the lot (hot one end sweet the other) will rev up when the tomatoes stall in the heat and if we are really lucky a couple of the vines (pumpkins, melons, beans, cucmalons) will out compete their local tomatoes for trellised space and give something. It's the wild west out there, all we can do right now is harvest, water and prey, and beat the tomatoes back from rooting into the native soil (the land lord is sus and no one can tell us where the septic system is so just …. no)

Hey Luke
surrre okay!!! i will, i got some seeds i never planted
Thank you! I am going to plant some, never thought to plant in July
Gonna try some thx didn’t think they will grow .
I don't think my carrots would have time to ripen. The ones I planted way back in March are only 1/4" thick after four months.
Glad your making this video, my previous seeds in the spring never came up. But nearly 100% germination on my spinach!
I do exactly the same thing, but I soak the cardboard before I place it on top of the soil and secure it with landscape staples 😊

I always had trouble with carrots, now I know, thank you!!

I can plant carrots now when the high temp is close to 112?

You mentioned covering the carrot seeds with cardboard in one of your other recent videos. So I planted last night. Thank you!
This is the ONLY way I got carrots growing.
👍 thanks for sharing
FIGURED THIS OUR FEW YEARS AGO, AND ITS CHANGED MY GARDEN FOR THE BETTER

Thank you so much for these tips…I am new to gardening and just got some carrots planted in empty spaces in my raised beds.😊
Seasonal Homestead uses burlap. Will these carrots be bitter?
I only use pelleted seeds now and space them out. I get great germination and there's MUCH less thinning.

I'm afraid of rotting the seeds if they're too wet 😢

It’s not free but ez straw works great as well
Your info is very useful
After putting down the cardboard, do you water again before you see sprouts?
I can't sow my seeds like this. I have to meticulously use a sharpie and make shallow holes so that my carrots grow singular and don't have to thin after germination.
How to grow carrots in clay soil? Do I need to haul in a truck load of sand?
I let some carrots go to seed 4 years ago and they come up all over, like weeds. I just gathered 2 seed heads and spread them all over.
Good tip thanks im giving this a go im in the UK

Hilarious, after I got my potatoes out of the ground I immediately replanted carrots & beets. I do several rounds of carrots and beets

Used 2 layers of cardboard for the first time this spring. First time I had full sprouting.
I don't have space for them, but plantrd beets!

I tried cardboard and ended up with termites underneath.
Do you think using a gutter for germination would work like some people do for peas, or would that be too much disturbance for carrots
Great reminder! I forgot to plant my carrots this year, but it’s not too late!
