See title. I want to plant something that is almost no maintenance, preferably native, on both sides of the fence so I don't have to weed whack. I want to eventually get to a lovely no lawn or minimal lawn situation. Also the easier to plant and grow the better.
Any ideas? I love flowers. Don't know where to start. Thanks in advance!!

Where are you in zone 6a? That’s not enough info to make a recommendation.
How tall do you want the plants?
Violets are always an option.
I’m in GR and so I’ve got a very comparable zone to work with.
I have a fence line that I planted forsythia along. They will only get to be 4-6′ tall. They’re in a predominately shaded/filtered light part of my yard.
If you truly want no maintenance plants, my thoughts are hostas.
Are you removing the dead hedge material or hoping to hide it?

My favorite no maintenance and drought tolerant/shade and sun tolerant flowering perennial that isn’t too tall is yarrow. They come in lots of different colors and are very easy to start from seed (I like the Colorado mix). I’m in the same zone as you. But they do die down back to the ground every winter, so if you want something evergreen, they wouldn’t be.
