Have you ever wondered what wonders sit behind those towering ivy-covered red-brick fences in the Adelaide Hills? A peek of a manor’s highest window and the gentle trill of birdsong whispers the secrets of the yard’s combed walkways and pristine garden beds. But still, you wonder if you’ll ever set eyes on the garden yourself.

Anyone? Maybe that’s just me. Perhaps you’re just a Downton Abbey fan looking for an excuse to escape into a world of whimsy and old-world elegance, and just feel a bit fancy for a day.

Either way, Hidden Gardens 2025 is opening an assortment of private and historic estates in the Adelaide Hills for just one day on Thursday 16 October.

The day, organised by the Hidden Gardens committee, is a fundraiser for Carrick Hill House and Garden Museum in Springfield. Visitors will be invited to explore a selection of secluded gardens, some dating back to the 1800s. The identities of the properties will remain a closely guarded secret until just days before the event. Locations will only be shared with ticket holders.

Rebecca Kennedy, an event organiser, said, “Garden lovers will delight in rarely seen grand structures and features such as lakes, ponds, old dry stone and mossy walls, parterres, grottos and sweeping lawns edged with ancient, towering trees.”

“Also rare plant collections, magnificent tree-sized rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, and magnolias that are only occasionally seen on the plains.”

Each property is located in or around Stirling, where in October, the pleasant mild temperatures will have returned, gardens flourishing after the winter rain.

Along with exclusive access to the private gardens, visitors will have access to plant sales, homemade cakes, biscuits and preserves, and discounted drinks and treats from participating local cafes. A raffle with up to $5,000 worth of prizes will also run on the day.

Tickets go on sale in mid-August and must be purchased ahead of the October date. Entry will not be available on the day, and ticket numbers are limited.

All proceeds from the event will support the ongoing maintenance and development of Carrick Hill’s historic gardens and museum.
