Weeds, and weeding as an exercise, can be both time consuming and tedious, with professional and amateur gardeners alike left frustrated by the practice.

The continuous battle pulling the pests out, only to find them sprouting again just days later has lead to some opting for chemical weed killers, which can be expensive and damaging to the environment.

For a long time, pulling the weeds out consistently by hand has been deemed to be the ‘only way’ to remove them, but some experts are now challenging this notion by suggesting there are only two items in your kitchen cupboards which could solve your weed problem entirely.

If the method is used properly, it can even banish your weeds from your garden forever, according to DevonLive.

The first ingredient which you will need to be armed with is a lemon. This is all thanks to its acidity, with the fruit acting as a powerful weed killer – with no harsh chemicals hidden inside.

All you have to do is apply the juice directly, which will dehydrate the weed, and cause them to wither, with this option great for patios, paths, and gravel areas.

Savvy gardeners at Gardeners’ World.com shared the lemon juice hack, alongside one which simply requires salt from your kitchen.

While these game changing hacks may not be as strong as your traditional weed killers, they are sure to aid your garden and the environment a lot more.

Lemon Juice

To create an effective homemade weed killer, you could use the juice of five lemons or, for ease, bottled lemon juice.

Decant the juice into a spray bottle and target those unsightly weeds, but remember to apply it on a day without rain so it isn’t washed away.

Salt

Saline solutions are also championed by Gardeners’ World for tackling unwanted plants, particularly on hard surfaces where you want to preserve fertile soil.

They propose a formula of one part common table salt to two or three parts water.

It’s critical, they advise, to opt for common table salt over alternatives like rock, sea, or Epsom salts.

Praised as a “cheap and easy” method by gardening experts, this salty mixture is touted for effectively dispatching weeds for good.
