Dug the grass outta this area bout a month ago but gotta wait till October to plant what I want. How the hell can I fully kill off these weeds? Don’t wanna use harsh chemicals cause I have dogs. Would vinegar work?

Yes, but get the 20% stuff from the hardware store…the 5% white vinegar won’t cut it. Add some dawn dish soap to the mixture to help it stick

Use an app like iNaturalist to identify the Plant and then research the proper way to remove its presence.

Sometimes the soil around the newly germinated weed seeds can simply be turned so the roots are exposed.

Covering it all up until October should smother all the weeds?

Why not put down cardboard &/or weed barrier??

  4. Its the outdoors, you can get rid of this but more and different things will grow. Seeds travel through the air. Theres no way to stop mother nature. Youll just have to keep pulling weeds until you plant something with a competitive root structure.

  5. If you are planting natives, be glad that these weeds are coming up as you are able exhaust the seed bank now rather than when you have to pick between the things you want growing and the things you don’t.

Basically, weed seeds have been deposited into the soil for who knows how long by birds, squirrels, etc. and now that the ground is free and clear those seeds are germinating. Better to exhaust all the weeds now.

In solarization you use a black or clear tarp to basically bake the soil and kill all the weeds but a lot of people recommend pulling the tarp off to try and get any remaining seeds to germinate. That’s what’s happened here. I would cover with a black tarp for the rest of the season and everything else will bake. You’ll then have a clean slate for planting in the fall.

A way to get growth to stop. Boiling water over the zones. Pull what you can first. After which apply Preen pre germination 6 month , cut open a 30 or 55 gallon plastic trash bag and lay over designated area.

Combo of buttonweed and lespedeza. Tough to control without the use of a glyphosate weed killer like Round Up.

Vinegar *is* a harsh chemical, believe it or not. It does a number on the soil and shouldn’t be used where you want to grow things.
