I bought this plant from a farmers market thinking it was a pothos. I’m a newbie so still have a lot to learn but I’m now thinking this looks more like my philodendron Brazil than a pothos…any input would be greatly appreciated!

    Nope, that’s a philodendron brasil 🙂

Though it is just as easy and fun to grow as a Pothos! People like it for the beautiful variegation in the leaves.

You (and the other commenter) are correct that this is a philodendron – if you want to get technical, it’s philodendron haderaceum ‘brasil,’ a variegated version of heartleaf philodendron.

An easy way to tell the difference between the heartleafs and epipremnum (pothos) is the growth habit – as I’m sure you’ve noticed with your Brasil, it produces new leaves via cataphyll, so the vine extends with a pointy end that will unfurl as a new leaf. Pothos new leaves, on the other hand, develop in the petiole (leaf stem) of the previous leaf and then break out.

(To make things exciting, many of the larger philos will start out making leaves the pothos way in their juvenile form, then switch to cataphylls as they mature, but our heartleaf friends are out of the gates with cataphyll growth.)
