Just bought about 40 acres in north central NC. Previous owners got bent over by a logging company who SHOULD HAVE just select cut the timber since 98% of the lands trees were undersized. The land company opted to just bulldoze almost all of it and left everything that was 16” in diameter and smaller. So I’ve got 30-40’ trees just PILED all around my land that I have to deal with, and don’t forget the stumps…

I understand it’s a bit bigger of a project than what’s normally in the group but hopefully there’s a little bit of wisdom floating around out there that will save me a ton of energy, time, and $$$.

I just purchased a Bobcat T650 skid steer (2speed/high flow), 4 in 1 72” bucket, stump grapple with hydraulic thumb, rake grapple, and 68” cut articulating brush cutter. Forestry Mulchers are a little bit out of budget so please avoid suggesting.

My question is, in what order would you tackle this monument of work based on the pics?… Rip stumps out of the path, and where the future homesite will be, first? Clear the log road second? Best way to try and pile and burn? Thanks

You should be able to find a logger that will just chip all those trees up for pulp , that’s so wasteful to just cut and lay down good timber

Well that sucks !!! . I’m so confused . I’ve never seen such an odd forest . It’s so dense , and the trees are so dang skinny , it’s more like a bamboo forest . I guess I’m just use to PA forests . Anywho , how soon do you plan on breaking ground for your home? Within a year a lot of those skinny trees would be composted back into the ground . The stumps could basically be taken down by a push mower … 🤣. You wouldnt pull them out . Honestly what I would do ? You got a lot of open space and not a lot of brush … I’d take a small chain saw and the bobcat and clear enough area to safely have a burn pile …. I’d keep cutting and tossing in . Once you have a large enough area , I’d move the burn pile to the next clearing and do the same there . The burning will eliminate the stumps . Still none of it is fun ! You were going to have to clear part of the land for your house .. I just hope they cleared the area you really wanted to put it !
