This time, I visited Joruri-ji Temple, a temple located in the south of Kyoto, Japan, to enjoy a garden created 900 years ago. Please enjoy it.

It took 2 hours by car from Kyoto city. The temple is located at the southernmost tip of Kyoto.
I am on my way to Joruriji Temple. Joruriji-temple is located in a quiet place surrounded by mountains. I arrived at Joruriji-temple. The priest kindly allowed me to enter the temple a little early. It really is a quiet place. Joruri-ji Temple was built in 1047,
This garden was completed in 1150. This means that this garden was built about 900 years ago. Why did I decide to visit this garden? It was because I wanted to see a garden of this old age. triad stones There are many old gardens left in Japan. However, there are very few gardens in Japan that are nearly 1,000 years old like this garden. Japanese gardens have changed over time, but this garden from about 1,000 years ago is unique. Particularly interesting is this stone arrangement . The Sakuteiki, a set of instructions for creating Japanese gardens, was written about 1,000 years ago. This book has been studied for a long time and is still a very important resource today. This garden was created at about the same time as the book was written, and the contents of the book can be seen in many places in the garden. This stone arrangement is one of them. In the Sakuteiki, it is written that “stones are set up like a wild shore,” and this arrangement of stones was used to represent a large ocean. Standing stones of a wild shore There are only a few gardens in Japan that have this arrangement, and it is a rare and precious form that rarely exists. It is no exaggeration to say that I came to this garden to see this arrangement of stones. Surrounded by mountains, it took some time for the sun to shine on the island of the pond. I used the time before the sun hit the island to go see the stone Buddha nearby. Right : A laughing Buddha. There are large stones here and there. The mountain path was more difficult than I had expected. Looks like I’ve arrived at the destination. A laughing Buddha. I guess someone in the past came this deep into the mountains to carve it. Did they carve it at an angle, or was it tilted at an angle? Then, I came back to Joruri-ji Temple. When the direction of the light changes, the scenery changes drastically. After being in this place for a long time, I feel as if my heart is being washed away. The light shone on the standing stones on the rough shore, and their shadows were also cool. Cool and Powerful. Of course, this form has not remained intact for a thousand years. This place has fallen into disrepair in the past. However, it has been restored many times, and this shape has been preserved. Most recently, in 2015, this garden was extensively restored. For nearly 1,000 years, many priests, temple officials, researchers, and gardeners have been protecting this garden. That is why we can still see this garden today.
I think this is truly amazing. I sincerely hope that this place will remain in the future.

  1. I loved seeing this garden. At first I didn’t think it was very impressive but when the sun shone on the garden and all the colors of the trees became more vibrant and the reflections on the water became more brilliant, I could see the great beauty. Thank you.

  2. though the Sakuteiki is a cornerstone of Japanese gardening, modern Japanese gardens differ quite a bit from the original ideas in the sakuteiki

  4. What a beautiful garden, accompanied by one of my favourite pieces of music to close. Thank you for sharing it with us. 🙏⛩️🪷☸️

  5. Really beautiful. Thank you again for sharing your work. The garden video is wonderful and flowing and your still photographs are incredible. The shutter snap sound effect you use before displaying them is way louder than the rest of the video and very jarring compared to the video. It made me jump several times. 😮😆

  6. As always, thanks for the video. Beautiful! I noticed something weird in the image color of the last two ones, I`m a right? The difference is very notorious between the pictures and the video. Are you using a special filters for any special reason?

  7. Thank you for your work on this channel, Matsunaga! Your videography is a pleasure to watch. I look forward to each video.

  8. Another fantastic video! Love this new format, and it was especially interesting to see a garden that was made around the same time as the Sakuteiki was written!

  9. Amazing that these Temple grounds still reflect, in a great part, what was intended in the design 900+ years ago! Also, it was a better choice of music for this second vlog of this new series. 😉 I look forward to the next garden tour!

  10. Music was beautiful! That pond and building as well as the changes in light through the day. The historical Buddha hike was also very nice to see.

  11. It is very interesting to see such an old garden. It seems that Japanese gardens have changed less over the centuries than historical gardens in Europe. The ones here are only from the 17th or 18th century at most, but have been constantly changed to suit the taste and style of the time. This seems to be much less the case in Japan.
