Trying to focus on natives (NE NJ) and this guy (tree of heaven if I’m not mistaken) snuck in from somewhere. Best way to successfully get rid of it?

It’s sumac; actually a nice plant, has great autumn color.

Tree of heaven, either dig out the roots (which can be a challenge if it’s spread since it grows new shoots via roots). If you only cut it it’ll panic and send up a ton of new shoots. Best way? In the late summer cut it and shoot some glysophate straight down the trunk, it’ll go to the roots and thus other shoots and kill it. Do it with any shoots visible. You can notch it or cut it.

This is tree of heaven. [Penn State has a great page](https://extension.psu.edu/tree-of-heaven)alllll about this POS. Now and into the fall is the time to treat it l. Do NoT cut it down. Don’t they to dig out the roots. Any piece left of the root will grow a new tree. You need to be aggressive with these. Also look for other seedlings and treat as well. Go for a walk around your neighborhood and see where others might be and encourage your neighbors to take care of theirs too.

Smooth edged leaves means tree of heaven. Sumac has toothed edges on leaves but otherwise looks similar. Find a way to dispose of it.

Burn whole property then sell property and move to different country. Don’t take anything with you burn your clothes even and pray that you didn’t get even a smidge of the ash on you.

Sever the limbs and paint the wound with herbicide. Normally I dont condone chemical poison sprays because of the native wildlife but if you only paint on the open cuts, the plant should consume it without runoff and affecting anything else.

Nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
