fresh rain water straight out of the tap It’s pretty cool huh guys if you’re thinking about designing a garden or getting seriously into gardening yourself then well done for finding this video because what I’m about to say I think is probably the single most important thing that you should do first when doing either of those things And what is it storing rain water That’s right If you think about that from the outset when you’re starting or designing a new garden then you can store masses and masses of rain water and almost not know that it’s even there You won’t have to have big rain barrels stored everywhere underneath your downpipes looking like an eyes saw And most importantly you won’t run out So to get around all of that and to keep the aesthetics that I want in the garden I’ve developed a system which gives me almost unlimited reliable source of rain water wherever I want it in the garden And I’m going to show you how Now it all starts here This is the most important part of this system and it’s a header I have daisy changed two 1,000 L black IBC totes So I’ve always got somewhere between 1,750 and,900 L of accessible water up here And they drain from this roof You probably can’t see it too well but it’s a long long roof with a deep gutter system This this building’s probably about 40 to 50 ft long With a big rainstorm here in England this lot could almost fill up in one go If you’re trying to do this off a small roof well you can do that But just be aware that if you’re going to use a lot down at the source uh then it’s going to take probably you know four or five good rainstorms or something like that So maybe four or five days for this header system to top back up So really you want to scale it with a big roof big header and then you can use as much as you want down there knowing that all you need is one good rainstorm and you’re good to go again Now people that I’ve seen do this before installed filter systems That’s probably a good idea I haven’t done that Uh but as you can see just there I’ve got like a brush system in the gutter So that keeps the vast majority of the of the big stuff out of the tank So I don’t really have a problem with sludge or anything sort of getting in the way of the water And I’ve been using this now for about 4 years Also where I’ve daisy chained the two tanks in between in the middle there I’ve just elevated it off the bottom of the two tanks So there’s probably about an inch or so’s worth of capacity at the bottom of each of these tanks that if they do get crudded up with stuff or sludge then that isn’t going to affect uh the water flow down to my source So that’s how I do that And if it gets really bad maybe in a couple of years then I’ll just drop in a sump pump suck some of that crap out But like I said this has been going on for a long time now and I haven’t had any problems with it Right All right So rather conveniently it’s just started raining which is great because I can show you the rate at which it’s filling up the tank It’s not raining that heavily but it’s certainly not light as you can see there And as you can get an idea from across the valley and the visibility there but let’s have a look Yeah that’s quite nice That’s a pretty good rate And you can see there’s no bits or crud or anything like that coming down uh into the tank as well It’s just pure rain water So I’m really happy with that Now we’ve just jumped back over the wall Those tanks are behind there That’s the roof there that it drains off Just want to make the point that height and head is the key to this So you can see I’m on a hill so it makes it easy for me But you want that source of water to be as high as possible So the highest point in your garden as you can get If you’ve got a flat garden then you need to think about trying to elevate that and turning it into a bit of a water tower Some of you may think well okay going to put a thousand liter IBC tote you know on a 4×2 frame or something like that It’s going to look a little bit ugly but you know what you can grow stuff up that turn it into a trellis get roses and wisteria going all over that and all of a sudden it disappears That’s the beauty of gardening Anyway I want to show you how much pressure you can get from just a very modest drop because the first stop I’ve got here is a little tap and it’s only about you know 6 ft down from the source Less than that So let’s have a look There it is Look at that Beautiful fresh rain water straight out of the tap It’s pretty cool huh look at the pressure you know you’re going to fill up a watering can PDQ from that So I’m quite happy But if you’ve got more head then the pressure is even better So let’s go and check that out Once you’ve set up that header system and you’re starting to store all that lovely rain water you then need to think about piping it around your garden So in this case we’re in the vegetable garden This is about 50 ft by about 20 ft So it’s not small The header system is up there You can’t quite see the roof but it’s just the other side of that ballastrade And that’s about good 100 meters away and a good 20 foot in in head or height away Right And you want to get yourself another storage container I’ve I’m using IBC containers because I think they’re quite easy to get especially here at Somerset with loads of farmers Uh you can get them cheaply on eBay or even free if people are giving them away which they sometimes are But you can also use you know 300 liter rain barrels Anything anything you can get your hands on that can store bloody water I like these cuz they’re big uh and they’re ergonomic with the space Right Right And then you want to pipe it from your header to your use source So I just use common garden hose That’s it Right It’s a good quality one but just common garden hose I don’t use 1in water pipe or sort of NDP that sort of professional water pipe Nothing like that Just common garden hose And you can see just bear with me with this nectarine plant cuz it’s growing like crazy But you can see it There we go Piped in to the top there And well here’s the really good part This really is the really good part I’ve connected it through a bulkhead connector to a stop because it means that the header tank is constantly trying to top up this water tank here Uh which it will do until it gets to a certain level of fullness and then the stop clock uh stops it from running again Which means whatever I use from here it always fills back up again This in very simple terms means you never have to top this up ever and you never have to top that up ever because that’s topped up by rain water So you’ve got close to as long as you’ve done the maths right unlimited supply of rain water exactly where you need it and when you need it And the beautiful thing about this is that you don’t have to stop here right you can daisy chain this over and over and over again So if you’ve got a big garden you can have three or four of these dotted all around uh the garden and which enables you to access clean beautiful fresh rain water whenever you need it wherever you need It’s fabulous I run a hell of a lot from this It’s quite a big vegetable garden and I water the surrounding areas like the fruit cage behind me just there and all the sort of the cut flower beds the other side Um so I use fixed um watering systems I’ve already put in using battery powered pumps I use solar powered drip irrigation systems I use taps directly straight straight from there I’ve daisy changed some dip tanks you know over there All sorts I’m constantly using it and it you know it’s never failed me and it’s never run out Now to cost I got that for free from a farmer around the corner A lot of them you can do especially if you’re in a farming area and you know a farmer because they’re very very common But if you want to pay for them uh on eBay secondhand they’re very cheap 4050 you can quite easily pick these up for or even if you want to pay full price for a brand new one It isn’t that expensive Now if you try and buy a big rain barrel a 300 liter rain barrel go and do it Have a look on Amazon and tell me how much they cost because they’re in the hundreds and hundreds of pounds right so if you try to replicate this using rain barrels around your garden then you’re into north of £1,000 easily I would say Whereas this whole system you know it cost me I don’t know maybe 100 120 quid something like that Uh it is fantastic So if you want to fortify your garden against the hotter and hotter summers and the drier and drier summers especially like we’re getting here in the south of England then this is the way to do it cheap easy access to beautiful clean rain water that you can use all around your garden all year round You can set one up and you can thank me later But anyway if you like the video like and subscribe as always If you didn’t then don’t bother It shall for

like the filer system and will look to add it to our tank. Thank you for the posting of this video cheers from australia
I've been looking into installing a rain collection system, and yours is an interesting option. I do have a quick question though. Your pipe from the gutter to the tanks looks like in a heavy rain, a lot of the water would miss the tank.
