Ditch the Soggy Yard: Dry Creek Beds for Drainage & Beauty

you see this four to 5 inch Cobblestone these dry cck beds are aesthetically pleasing and if you have swailes along the driveway or through your property and every time it rains the water cuts through the property you’re not going to be able to cut the grass it’s always going to be saturated so you just form a dry cck bed this is a great solution to those wet swells when you’re moving High volumes of water this really helps because it slows the water down when water’s running over Stone aggregate especially large aggregate like this the velocity slows down if this Stone wasn’t here then the water would pick up so much velocity it would erode and cut deep grooves in the terraferma

  1. Yes looks cool at first…
But your not mentioning the negatives-

Still holds pools of water to breed mosquitoes.

Still a pain in the butt to trim the grass up against the rock.

Very costly for all that stone.

All that stone plugs up with leaves in less than 5 years and looks terrible full of natural debris.

Looks hideous when trash like plastic bags, covid masks, and food wrappers are stuck in the rocks.

** edit ALSO looks hideous when grass from the ditch grows up through the fabric which will deteriorate and now you have a rock ditch full of weeds and mosquitoes 🦟

  2. Looks great. I have done a thing or two like this and definitely helpful. Less erosion and way more pretty to look at especially when its flowing.

  3. An amazing Idea and would be even nicer with some shrubs and perennials at the side of the 'river'.
Even more stunning would be to transform the Green Desert (lawn) by doing a 'No Mow May'
That way the lawn could also aid in water retention!

  4. I know a guy that put an inground pool in his backyard. When it rained a lot, the pool would flood. He built one of these dry creek beds to direct the water around and off of his property and now there are no issues. Worked very well for him

  5. Would it be best to use yard drainage or French drain pipes for the dry creek bed? Or those it matters?
