I was pulling weeds and saw some roots. I pulled and started to see more become visible. Before I knew it, this is what I see and that is not even all of it.

What is it??????????

I wonder if they have anything to do with that tree they seem to be coming directly from…

Those are the roots of that poor tree you are suffocating with plastic and rocks. In fact, you may have such shallow roots BECAUSE of how poorly that tree is planted/mulched. Trees use their roots to breathe, as well as take up water and soil nutrients.

Remove that weed barrier and pull back the stones and any other mulch or dirt until the root flare is exposed. The root flare is where the trunk of the tree starts to widen at the bottom before it spreads into roots.

Stones make terrible mulch. They reflect heat back at plants, do not retain moisture, and do not break down to feed the soil.

  8. Trees have roots. You have a tree. You might kill the tree if you continue.

  9. First, you must get to the root of the problem

I love this OP thank you.

It has given me motivation to be more patient to the new crew member that just got hired (I had to show him how to mow the lawn)

  11. Tree roots are wild. This is not at all unusual. Some grow super deep, some grow stupidly horizontal, some destroy pipes, some destroy foundations.

    Nature always wins.

Looks like Roots, if you got plants around there’s roots, if you got trees around there’s bigger roots.

That tree is probably mad af rn. You can cover the roots back and it’ll be fine, give it some good dirt & a watering if you want to be nice.
