PICKNEY, Mich. (WILX) – The 26th annual LACASA Center Garden Tour took place throughout the day on Saturday. An event that showcases six different gardens across Mid-Michigan.
From Howell to Hartland people could tour private gardens full of “diverse landscapes” and “vibrant colors.”
“I can’t share enough about our community and those individuals that open up their homes and their gardens to support LACASA,” Bobette Schrandt, President and CEO of LACASA said. “They work, and you’ll see them and they say that it took a year to get ready for this, and it’s just amazing.”
LACASA Center offers support and services for those who are victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual violence. According to LACASA, “Each ticket sold makes a tangible difference. Every dollar raised directly supports LACASA’s vital, life-saving services for survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual violence. From safe shelter and crisis intervention to counseling and advocacy.”
Schrandt says LACASA is unique because, “we are the only ones in Michigan that do all three interpersonal violence under one roof.”
One of the gardens people got to enjoy was owned by Linda Berry and her husband, Kerry Fitzpatrick.
Berry nominated their garden without telling Fitzpatrick at first. Initially being hesitant, because they he had never showed off his garden to the public the way this would.
“He didn’t know if anybody else would be interested. I said ‘oh my gosh, yes,’” Berry said.
However, once Fitzpatrick learned more about LACASA and the message behind it, he was all in.
” I was very excited about the idea that about LACASA, particularly what it stands for and the services they provide for the community…Even if they decided not to choose our garden, to be part of the tour, I said I wanted to help out.”
With the funds raised at the Garden Tour, LACASA Center is able to provide programs and support. They also serve in Michigan schools, teaching students about ways to prevent abuse and help survivors.
